Bernard-Henri Levy is one of France's most familiar contemporary intellectuals. He recently participated at an "Ideas" forum in Lisbon where he defended his view that Europe should be the ideology of the 21st Century and if it faces a crisis its come from too much pragmatism. Our reporter Sergio Cantone sat down with him.
He started by asking him why he thought Europe was no longer considered a place of vision. Is it due to a cultural problem or political crises?
Bernard-Henri Levy
"Common values are there and Europe is democratic. But ulitmately what is Europe?"
Bernard-Henri Levy
"Europe is a machine that has produced peace and democracy. We are here right now in Portugal that was once led by a fascist regime. Its turn to democracy was partly the result of an inspiration from the rest of Europe. That is Europe - a trigger mechanism to create democratic values. Now maybe the idea of democracy is no longer new and thats why Europe is no longer the source of inspiration it was."
" You say Europe as a whole creates democracy but dont you think individual countries compete and claim to be the freest?"
Bernard-Henri Levy"For the time being I dont see that kind of competition in Europe. Rather I see a race to see who is more nationalist. In otherwords who will defend their citizens the best. All the recent election campaigns in Europe were led by leaders who said to their voters "Europe its good for us, vote for Europe its good for our country. Thats not a campaign for Europe. I dream of a European campaign where we all compete to try and be the freest nation and most European. Sadly thats not the case. "
"Do you think the problem is that Europeans feel a bit lost or are their leaders not up to the job?"
Bernard-Henri Levy " As far as I am concerned I think there are two kinds of speeches that I mistrust. There is the one that says "Its our leaders fault", and the other "Its the peoples fault."
Thats too over-simplified. The problems goes deeper than that.
At the moment there is a reactionary wind blowing. Nationalism is on the rise and a strong feeling of blinkered vision at the expense of others. And even darker tendencies are on the rise like anti-semitism and racism which are hardly Europe's best friends.I think that is where the problem is right now. As for the leaders, its true maybe they are not the best around but we cant reject our responsibilities by saying its fault of Europe's leaders. Thats not an answer"
"Turkey is centre-stage right now in the debate between Europe and Islam. Do you think Turkey could one day be part of what you call European values?"
Bernard-Henri Levy" There are two things which strike me as obvious. Firstly Turkey is not yet ready to join the EU. Turkey does not recognise the Armenian genocide. Mein Kampf is a best seller in Turkey and we are seeing a rise in the so-called moderate Islamic movement within civilian society. That kind of Turkey is without question not ready to join Europe. However just as it was the case for Portugal, Spain and Greece before that - Europe can be a generous lover which attracts the best. In otherwords the lure of joining Europe can help or encourage Turkey to modernise at a time when its hesitating on which path to take - the one to darkness or the one to democracy. "
