- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

Re: In Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide - 2008

    HAMDEN HIGH HOLDS GENOCIDE SYMPOSIUM
by Ann DeMatteo, New Haven Register, Conn.

    New Haven Register (Connecticut)
    April 15, 2008 Tuesday

Apr. 15--HAMDEN -- Millions of people died in atrocities committed
during the 20th century, according to Hamden High School students who
became immersed in the topic of genocide and presented their findings
at a symposium for other students.

Students were rapt in thought recently when groups of freshmen in
Mark Gabriel's world history honors class spoke about mass killings
in the Belgian Congo, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur in western Sudan.

"Even if we're talking about the war on terrorism, the conflict in
Iraq, the age of Imperialism or World War II, or the outbreak of
genocide in Armenia at the end of World War I," the issue of human
rights comes up in the study of world history, according to Gabriel.

"Often, we talk about how in history (genocide) is swept under the
    rug," he said.

As a result, Gabriel challenged his students to put together a
symposium. Gabriel and Quinnipiac University student teacher Meaghan
Walsh reviewed possible topics with students. Walsh put the students
into groups, balancing teams according to student strengths. Then,
the freshmen spent three weeks researching the topics. They created
posters and hand-outs and developed PowerPoint presentations that
    were shown at the symposium.

"They were given a topic and had to explore what happened and
construct a thesis. They formulated opinions and decided how to
present the information to the audience," Gabriel said."I think
they did tremendous. Some upperclassmen were critical of the
presentations. There were some who weren't prepared enough, and some
who felt they didn't have enough time and wanted to present more.

They realized they could do more than they ever thought," Gabriel said.

The students who studied the Cambodian genocide from 1975 to 1979 --
Mike Nolan, Patrick Cyr, Lia DeRisi, Mara Lieberman and Colin Doyle --
took some time out during the symposium to talk about what they had
learned. "We were interested in it; it was similar to the Holocaust,"
said Lia. "It's interesting that it's lesser known, but it's one of
the bigger atrocities," Mike said. "It's pretty shocking because no
one knows about it," said Patrick. Pol Pot was the Communist leader
of the Khmer Rouge, the ruling political party of the time. It's
estimated that 1.5 million died through executions, starvation and
forced labor of all kinds of people in the Southeast Asian country
on the border of Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.

After people were killed, they were buried in mass graves that were
later known as the killing fields. The graves started to become known
    in 1995, the students said.

The genocide in Rwanda in 1994 lasted 100 days and between 800,000
and 1 million people were killed.

"The situation in Rwanda is repeating itself in Darfur. We can come
together and stop genocide and death," said student Noah Chevan.

Deaths ranged from 3 million to 30 million when the Congo Free State
was run by King Leopold from 1885 to 1908.

More than 400,000 have lost their lives in Darfur since 2003, according
to information passed out by the students.

"They're very passionate about what they studied. This is good stuff,"
Superintendent of Schools Frances M. Rabinowitz was heard saying as
    she was leaving the symposium.

What if I find someone else when looking for you? My soul shivers as the idea invades my mind.

DR. HILMAR KAISER TO SPEAK AT YOUTH RALLY FOR RECOGNITION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The ARF Shant Student Association (ARF Shant) will
hold its annual "Youth Rally for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide"
on the evening of Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 at the central square of
            California State University, Northridge (CSUN).

The keynote speaker of the evening will be Dr. Hilmar Kaiser, an
Ottoman-era archival expert and Armenian Genocide historian. Kaiser
will present new findings that shed light on the responsibility of
Ottoman Turkish officials in the Armenian Genocide.

The ARF Shant Student Association chose to hold the rally, an annual
tradition, at CSUN this year, because of the university's status of
having the largest number of Armenian college students outside of
Armenia. The CSUN Armenian Student Association is a co-organizer of
            the event.

The event will also contain an artistic program along with speeches by
various community and student group leaders. The Youth Rally is free
of charge and open to the public. More information is available
            online at http://www.arfshant.org/.

The ARF Shant Student Association's mission is to politicize and
mobilize the Armenian university and college student population in
Southern California to further the Armenian cause. The ARF Shant and
CSUN Armenian Student Associations are full members of the
Confederation of All-Armenian Student Associations (All-ASA).

PEABODY TO MARK ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TOMORROW
              by Stacie N. Galang

              The Salem News
              Distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Business News
              April 16, 2008 Wednesday
              Beverly, Massachusetts

Apr. 16--PEABODY -- Although fewer survivors remain, the city will
continue its tradition of commemorating the 93rd anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide tomorrow morning by raising the country's flag
              outside City Hall.

The ceremony was begun in the early 1990s by former Mayor Peter
Torigian and has continued since, mayoral aide Mary Bellavance said.

Torigian's mother survived the catastrophic event.

"This ceremony is our small way of paying tribute to the martyrs of
the Armenian Genocide," the former mayor is remembered for saying.

Bellavance, Mayor Michael Bonfanti, Torigian's daughter Mary Torigian
Foley and others from the Torigian family have helped carry on the
              annual commemoration.

"We have not missed a year," Bellavance said.

Bonfanti will lead off a short program inside City Hall following the
11 a.m. flag raising. The Rev. Vartan Kassabian of North Andover's
St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church will give both the blessing
and the guest remarks. Filmmaker Apo Torosyan will give a video
              presentation called "Witnesses."

The genocide was a Turkish campaign between 1915 and 1923 to
exterminate the Armenian people living in the crumbling Ottoman
empire. The campaign included death marches and concentration camps.

At tomorrow's commemoration, Congressman John Tierney or a
representative from his office is expected to give remarks.

After the ceremony, light refreshments will be available.

FRENCH MASONS TO TAKE PART IN ARMENIAN DEMONSTRATION ON APRIL 24
                By H. Chaqrian

                AZG Armenian Daily
                18/04/2008

                Genocide

According to information spread by "Turkish-NY" news agency, based in
USA, the Grandmaster of the Great East Mason lodge, France, declared
that the members of the lodge are to take part in the demonstration
of the Armenians on April 24 dedicated to the Armenian Genocide. The
news agency notes that the French Masons are once against supporting
the Armenians' claims about the genocide.

Why "again"? The matter is that in February the Grandmaster had given
interview to the Turkish press and said the following, "Two years
ago we visited the Turkish lodge of freemasons, where with all our
courtesy we demanded our Turkish brothers to think seriously on the
matter of the Armenian genocide and not co conceal the responsibility
of the Turkish people. Although our words were strongly argued,
later on some of our Turkish brothers came to me and said, 'Your're
right, for no one speaks about the Genocide in this country'. Then
the relations between the two lodges normalized".

Turkish newspaper "Vatan" also addresses this issue in its April
14 publication. According top "Vatan" the Grandmaster said that
although France was late to recognize the Holocaust, he expects
his Turkish brothers to have similar approach to the issue of the
                Armenian Genocide.

On April 24, Paris, the Great East lodge Grandmaster is to hold
a speech at the monument of Komitas and take part in the march
organized by the Armenian community of France. The march is to end
with a protest demonstration near the Turkish Consulate in Paris.

"Vatan" also informs that the well known leader of the "Union Against
Genocide", Ali Ertem, is invited to the genocide commemoration events,
which are to take place from April 23 to April 27.

                  AS I SEE IT

                  By Harry N. Mazadoorian

One of the greatest ironies involving the Armenian Genocide almost a
century ago is the radically different reaction it brought forth from
the United States then and now.

April 24 marks the 93rd anniversary of what would be the first
genocide perpetrated in the 20th century: the death of more than 1.5
million Armenians by murder, starvation and deportation at the hands
of the Ottoman Empire. This barbarity served as the blueprint for
expanded atrocities toward the middle of the century and emboldened
Adolph Hitler to conclude that such horrors could be conducted in full
view of the world community with impunity. Continuing programs by the
Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark
University and, on Tuesday, a program there by Professor Richard
Hovannisian of UCLA highlights the importance of never forgetting such
                  inhumanity.

At the time of the Armenian Genocide, and its preceding massacres of
the 1890s, a seemingly endless torrent of American humanitarian
efforts poured across the oceans to assist those Armenians who had
miraculously survived the savagery and brutality. American newspapers
carried report after report of the brutality and sparked a previously
                  unheard-of generosity and concern.

Peter Balakian's best-selling book, `The Burning Tigris,' reports that
America's and Massachusetts' own angel of mercy, Clara Barton,
personally went to Constantinople in 1896 to oversee the humanitarian
efforts. Professor Balakian, of Colgate University, chronicles
numerous other pro-Armenian relief initiatives from America at that
time and then again after the unprecedented Genocide of 1915. Indeed,
he reports that one of the earliest efforts began at a rally by
indignant Boston luminaries, including the governor of Massachusetts,
                  at Faneuil Hall.

Herculean efforts such as those of the Near East Relief organization
provided food and shelter for thousands of helpless children, my late
mother being one of them. Comments of congressional leaders and
elected officials - including Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson -
as well as almost daily headlines in the leading American newspapers
left no doubt as to what was going on - and that the United States was
meeting its moral obligation to not only protest but to provide
                  assistance.

Regrettably, today the zealous passion of the greatest country in the
history of civilization has cooled, and successive administrations and
congresses find excuse after excuse to keep from passing a mere
resolution recognizing and deploring the genocide.

Despite a mountain of uncontroverted evidence documenting the
Genocide, the government of Turkey continues a charade of denial and
stands essentially alone challenging the findings of eyewitnesses,
statesmen and legitimate scholars of genocide. In addition, it expends
massive funds to lobby the government of the United States to prevent
                  recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Recently, Congress finally seemed poised to enact the commemorating
resolution, but a last-minute bullying effort by Turkey derailed the
effort - at least temporarily. Turkey pulled out all the stops,
frantically threatening that the United States would lose its best
Muslim ally in the Middle East with a litany of speculative
                  ramifications.

Turkey refers to the Armenian Genocide as an `internal, civil or
political matter,' as though the countless unarmed children who were
slaughtered were even capable of having a single `political' thought
                  in their starving bodies.

Many congressmen privately recognize the atrocities but refuse to act
because of an expressed fear of `offending' the current Turkish
government - a government not even in place at the time of the
killings - and losing them as an ally in the volatile Middle
East. Some, wishing to avoid taking a stand, claim it is something to
be left to historians and not governments to judge.

While it is, of course, essential that our country be ever mindful of
its national interests, history has demonstrated time and time again
that placating and ignoring injustice can lead to no other consequence
than greater future injustice. Cambodia, Rwanda, the list goes on and
                  on.

If Clara Barton were still here, she'd be truly saddened. First, for
the indelible memories of the atrocities which she saw. Saddened even
more that after 93 years, American leaders forget their moral
obligation and delude themselves into thinking that some good could
possibly come by placating an ally and avoiding the recognition of a
                  well-documented historical atrocity.

If Clara Barton were here today, she'd be weeping.

Harry N. Mazadoorian, a lawyer in Kensington, Conn., is Distinguished
Senior Fellow at Quinnipiac University Law School's Center on Dispute
Resolution. His parents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide.

*Los Angeles, CA* - The Armenian National Committee of America - Western
Region (ANCA-WR) attended a special session of the Los Angeles City Council
commemorating the 93rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 18,

"The city council of Los Angeles' commitment and leadership serves as an

the country," stated ANC-WR Executive Director Antranig Kzirian. "Today's
statement is a reminder that the consequences of genocide and its denial
remain with us to this day - and that the gag rule that Turkey has placed on
the United States must be lifted," he added.

Armenian Genocide identified as template for Holocaust and other ‘modern’ genocides

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ New York Times bestselling author, Professor Peter Balakian joined political figures, and representatives and members of Sydney’s Armenian community in commemorating the 93rd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia.

Balakian, Rebar Professor of the Humanities at Colgate University and Raphael Lemkin Prize-winning author of The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response (2003), exposed the 1,000 attendees to research identifying the Armenian Genocide as the ‘template’ used by Adolf Hitler for the Jewish Holocaust, as well as other ‘modern’ genocides.

"To understand the Jewish Holocaust, to understand the Cambodian Genocide, to understand Darfur; we must first of all understand their template of genocide in the modern period, the Armenian Genocide," said Prof. Balakian.

Balakian’s address highlighted the need for worldwide recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

"Professor Balakian has brought great exposure to the Armenian cause worldwide and he is now continuing this in Australia," said Mr. Varant Meguerditchian of the organizing Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee.

"The research he presented tonight shows why recognizing and condemning acts of Genocide remains an important human rights priority."

massacred by Ottoman Turkey in the Armenian Genocide."
                      - The Hon. Dr. Brendan Nelson MP
                      Leader of the Opposition

"It is fitting that the Australian community joins with you on this day to
acknowledge the debt owed to those who died in the genocide, to commemorate
their lives and to celebrate your enduring culture and people."
                      - The Hon. Ms Maxine McKew MP
Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education & Child Care

"No Armenian family escaped being touched by the genocide. That is why, for
me, having the opportunity to visit the Armenian Genocide Monument in
Yerevan two years ago was one of the most emotional experiences of my public
                      life."
                      - The Hon. Joe Hockey MP
Shadow Minister for Health & Ageing

"The Armenian Genocide was an attempt to exterminate an entire race. You
come together today to say 'you failed'."
                      - The Hon. Bronwyn Bishop MP
                      Shadow Minister for Veterans' Affairs

"You have a strong friend in the Federal Coalition and tonight on this most
important night of remembrance for the Armenian community we reaffirm our
strong commitment to the Armenian community."
                      - Senator the Hon. Chris Ellison
Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship

"It is a day commemorating tremendous suffering by your people, and an
undeniable fact which is noted by New South Wales marking the 24th of April
each year as a 'Day of Remembrance' for the victims of the Armenian
                      Genocide. Lest we forget."
                      - The Hon. Morris Iemma MP
                      Premier of New South Wales

"On April 25, all Australians will commemorate Anzac Day by uttering the
words 'Lest we forget'. 'Lest we forget' the Anzacs of 1915, and 'Lest we
forget' the victims of the Armenian Genocide'."

                      ARMENIAN COMMUNITY COMMEMORATE GENOCIDE

                      Australia

Around 1,000 people from Australia's Armenian community gathered in
Sydney's north last night to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the
                      Armenian genocide.

The genocide refers to the massacres and forced deportations of
Armenians under the Turkish Ottoman Empire during and after World
                      War I.

Last night's guest speaker, visiting US professor Peter Balakian,
said the lessons from the early part of the 20th century were still
                      relevant today.

"We can't understand the Holocaust, or the Cambodian genocide or the
Rwandan genocide without understanding the template for all genocide
in the modern period," he said.

The Turkish Government continues to dispute the use of the word
                      "genocide" to describe the events.

Sydney's Armenian Community Commemorates the Armenian Genocide

                      April 26, 2008

The Sydney Armenian community came together on Sunday 20th of April
2008 for the annual commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. The annual
commemoration is organised by the three traditional Armenian Political
Parties comprising of the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party, the
Social Democratic Hunchakian Party and the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation and is supported by Sydney based Armenian religious,
cultural, educational, media, benevolent and sporting organisations.

The key note speaker at this year's commemoration was New York Times
Bestselling Author, Professor Peter Balakian who joined political
figures, representatives and members of Sydney 's Armenian community
in commemorating the 93rd anniversary of the Turkish campaign to
                      annihilate the Armenian nation.

Represented at the commemoration were the Prime Minister of Australia,
the Honourable Kevin Rudd MP, as well as the Leader of the Federal
Opposition, Dr. Brendan Nelson. Also represented at the commemoration
were the Premier of New South Wales, the Honourable Morris Iemma and
the Leader of the Opposition of New South Wales, Mr. Barry O'Farrell
                      MP.

Professor Balakian, Rebar Professor of the Humanities at Colgate
University and Raphael Lemkin Prize-winning author of The Burning
Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America 's Response (2003)
highlighted the critical role that the Armenian Genocide played as a
                      precursor for other modern genocides.

The Armenian Genocide was used by infamous 20th century dictators
including Adolf Hitler in planning and justifying the execution of the
European Jews, Gypsies, communists and homosexuals during World War
                      II.

Professor Balakian highlighted the shared history of Armenians and
Australians which was fostered following the arrest of Armenian
community leaders and intellectuals on April 24, 1915 in Istanbul
Turkey , and the Gallipoli landing of the Anzacs on April 25, 1915 .

Balakian's address stressed the need for worldwide recognition and
                      condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

In refuting Turkish claims that the events of 1915 was an example of
the many tragedies that befell the people of the Ottoman Empire due to
the prevailing war time conditions, Professor Balakian was able to
present in a logical and systematic manner the events that prove that
the Armenian Genocide was pre-conceived and highly organised centrally
                      by the Turkish authorities.

Balakian stressed that besides being the first example of a modern
genocide, what made the Armenian Genocide further unique was the use
of technology by the Turkish authorities.

The telegram was extensively used to issue concise instructions to all
regions of the Ottoman Empire on how to eradicate the Armenians.

And with all able men killed, cargo trains were used to transport the
remaining Armenian population comprising of women, children and the
elderly to established concentration camps in the Syrian Desert
. These concentration camps condemned those that were transported
there to certain death by hunger and disease.

Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Australia and New Zealand,
His Eminence Archbishop Aghan Baliozian in his statement to the
attendees said the days of sadness and sorrow have long past. Instead
the Armenian people in both Armenia and the Diaspora are now in
                      pursuit of justice and accountability.

While welcoming the growing number of countries, states, provinces and
city councils who have officially acknowledged the Armenian Genocide,
Archbishop Aghan Baliozian said what the Armenian people are seeking
is the official acknowledgment of the crimes committed against the
Armenian people by past Turkish authorities.

The Turkish acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide will prove to be
the most meaningful to the Armenian people Archbishop Aghan Baliozian
concluded, drawing a thunderous applause from the attendees.
