Lamborn sending wrong message on Armenian Genocide
The Armenian Genocide - the first genocide of the 20th century - was described by our ambassador to the Ottoman Empire as a campaign of race extermination; 1.5 million Armenians perished. Today, the Turkish government is finessing this objective as a 21st-century Armenian "final solution."
Armenia, an ancient land, encompassed the Biblical mountains of Ararat where Noah's Ark came to rest after the fiood. It was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 A.D.
Turkey, the current land owner, has through a series of egregious laws systematically desecrated Armenia's past cultural glories, sought to erase its historic Christian roots through the confiscation of churches, and instituted procedures that will ensure Christianity cannot survive within its borders.
It also maintains a strangling economic blockade of all trade with the now independent state of the Democratic Republic of Armenia.
Colorado's American-Armenian community has responded resoundingly by utilizing a congressional resolution condemning the Armenian Genocide to draw attention to the plight of Christian Armenians. Our General Assembly, governor and all of those members of Congress presently seeking reelection support this position.
All, that is, except Rep. Doug Lamborn.
Over his first term, Lamborn has wobbled through an uncomfortable series of flipfllops on this issue. While he presently supports a reafirmation of the Armenian Genocide, he has added a stipulation for his support and that is simply not acceptable. The significance of his position is that by failing to respond in an unequivocal manner, Lamborn effectively gives the Turkish government a green light to pursue its current strategy of ethnic and religious cleansing.
Jeff Crank, his primary opponent, has unequivocally pledged to support bipartisan congressional efforts to recognize the Armenian Genocide and address the injustices occurring in Turkey today.
