  • Turkish Nationalism - Article

Very interesting read. Especially the part where there is mention of a survey carried out with EU support on senior Turkish high school kids with questions about ethnic, religious, political, sexual, national and class issues bundled in 24 groups. Kids were asked to rate each group as:

    1- They are all bad
    2- Some are good
    3- Most are good
    4- None are bad

Most kids have positive views only for Turks and Muslims. Arabs, blacks, nationalists (of the grey wolf kind), Europeans, rich people, Aleviites and Germans gave average results above "Some are good". Atheists (50,8%), Armenians (46,5%) and Jews (37,6%) scored at the "They are all bad" end.

The article also mentions research done by a Turkish-Armenian academician Nazan Maksudyan about Turkish nationalism where she puts forth that racism was an essential part of Turkish nationalism from the very beginning and not a later entry.

    Heh. That's pretty cool.

A lot of people have started to associate "Nationalism" with "Extremism". I remember at the start of the Iraq war, it suddenly became "not cool" to be patriotic in many social circles, and dissent reached its highest.
