  • 301 Kere Hayir !

Turkish professors have started “no 301” campaign in Turkey. Article 301 from the penal code makes the recognition of the Armenian genocide criminal act in Turkey. European Union has harshly criticized the article. The newly-launched of the campaign is website (“No 301!”) and is available in Turkish language only.

It is one of the vague criminal laws that has grey zones in it. It is open to interpretation. If someone openly humiliates Turkish nation he/she can face punishment/imprisonment. But what is the criteria or where is the line it is open to interpretion. Orhan Pamuk was accused according to that article.
Cemil Cicek, minister of justice suprisingly supported that article and there was internal unrest withing Erdogan's party about this law.

I know some of the professors who has signitures (Barlas and Esenbel)

Talk of Genocide/Holocaust should be free everywhere and this should be regardless of whether one is for or against it. Nobody should be arrested because s/he accepts or denies the Armenian Genocide anywhere in the world. Everyone should be free to speak.
