  • Proto-genocide?

I recently read a book by Gunduz Aktan, titled 'Acik Kriptolar' in Turkish. Aktan is a former diplomat and now a columnist, I believe, in Radikal newspaper. In his book he mentioned the term 'Proto-genocide', coined by Halil Berktay, during a conference in Michigan.

Purportedly, Berktay infuriated the Turks because of his new terminology including the g-word, while upsetting some Armenians because of his 'proto' prefix. I do not know any details about Berktay's work or approach, so I was wondering if anyone has heard about it.

From time to time, I post writings from Halil Berktay. I'll dig up some links for you. He's a history professor at Sabanci U. and one I respect very much for his intellect and bravery.

I would say Halil Berktay and Gunduz Aktan are polar opposites.
