It is not surprisng that we have had an increase of Turkish membership to this site lately. Whenever outside events such as Hrant Dink's murder, the French Parliamentary vote or the upcoming U.S. Resolution occur, we see an upsurge in activity (mostly negative) and it's understandable that in such an environment, strong reactions will be elicited on both sides.
I'll state the obvious here. The Armenian Genocide is going to forever be an issue which alienates Armenians and Turks from each other and that is an enduring consequence of 1915; a legacy that the perpetrators have left for us and a reminder that there will never be heaven on this earth. I think we all know this. It's no doubt a topic that will bring up mutual hatred and future misunderstandings. Everyone who has joined this site already has their mind made upregarding this matter and I sincerely doubt anyone will be swayed in a new direction; Armenian or Turk.
If your motives are to change minds, you are indeed in the wrong place. And the only result to your futile efforts will end in insults as longtime members lose patience. Please understand, we've heard it all before, ad nauseum. This is the unfortunate truth but such is life and life goes on.
The fact that this is a site by Armenians, for Armenians, and is dedicated to the Armenian Genocide should make it abundantly clear that we feel strongly about this issue and our minds will not be changed. This isn't a challenge, I'm just stating the stark reality. That is the modus operandi of the site, to discuss, exchange doucmentation, news, research, and personal ancedotes regarding teh Armenian Genocide.
That being stated, this is not a Turkish/Armenian understanding forum as indeed we are admittedly partisan on this issue. The foremost rule on this site is that we do not accept members who deny the Genocide...full stop. If you want to talk about the mitigating events that led to the Genocide, the why, the when, the where, the people, the motives, history surrounding the time period, etc., very well. If we are able to answer some of your questions and educate you in some way; fantastic.
I would like to remind the membership that the focus of this site is to exchange information regarding the Armenian Genocide. You'll notice, if you've taken the time, that we post articles from scholarly journals, newpapers, and other periodicals related to the topic and then we comment and compare those items and discuss them. I cherish what I've learned at this site from most of the membership and I respect most members.
While I suggest that all the name calling cease on this forum. I also suggest that SOME of the Turkish members leave this forum or at least take a hiatus. Most of the proclamations, demands, insults, etc. have been made again and again by various Turkish members who for various reasons (banning, loss of interest, etc.) have come and gone. Basically, we've heard it all and like I wrote previously, this is why we tend to seemingly overreact at times. So if I've insulted you in the past, my apologies. While you may be a new member to this site and honestly feel you are bringing something new, you should perhaps reconsider. Like I said, we heard it before and it is a waste of our time and yours. Believe me, we have every negationist counter-arguement down pat. It bares repeating but we've heard it all.
Of course you are at liberty to ignore what I'm asking and that is your prerogative but please think on this in a mature fashion.
If it is your desire to debate the Armenian Genocide or pick a fight for any reason, this site is not for you and you should not expect or be warranted a welcome here. You won't last long as a member and yes, we do check IP addresses and don't even think of re-joining. Remember, you are always free to set up and manage your own website related to this matter if our mission here leaves you unsatisfied. Good luck.
We do have some valuable Turkish members of this forum who I think should remain and even deserve better treatment (hitite, elendil, Vogelgrippe are among them) from resident Armenians. They've stoked some decent conversations and I've seen them get dumped on by both Armenians and their fellow Turks.
Thank you,
Joseph
