    Joseph & Phantom -

Normally I would find myself in full agreement with what you have expressed here. However I have come to the realization that the extreme corruption at the core of the Turkish government has made all our "moderate" hope just so much wishful thinking. The way I now see it is that we have only a very short time to act. Once the US President George Bush is out of office we will have little hope to expect that the kind of arguments I propose will be accepted by the American Government and that we can get it to act on our behelf. Yes it is apparent that the US government - along with a coalition of concerned Christian European nations - must take matters into its own hands. Only through invasion and occupation of Anatolia can justice be served. In that way the jihadists will move in and create a terroristic environment where all Turks will have to look back and ask themselves how they allowed it to happen. And then they will start questioning their history and the facade of the Republic of Turkey and its founding. Meanwhile I suggest that Turkey remain in occupation while they kill off each other (and the Kurds and Armenians quietly annex what is ours). This will be their (forced) pennance - as they can't seem to take it upon themselves to reflect and make things right. Thats my postiton and I'm sticking to it. Hey - you can dream and think wishful thoughts...so can I!

If you look back to US presidents, you can note that they're coming with pre-plans to execute ... for example:

George Bush (1990) - Desert Storm - Conflict in Gulf Area
Bill Clinton - Peace maker - 8 years of calm politics and peace talks
George W. Bush - Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, ... etc. (let's hope he gets off soon before he starts a WWIII...

I'm sure the next will be like Clinton, some calm period to do some aftermath calculations and draw a new plan outline for the next president ...

I agree with "1.5 million" that the next 4 or 8 years of US presidency (after Bush) will see the Turkish Bill ...

Good points. We do have a short time to act and all Armenians need to ante up to get the resolutions passed everywhere we can and continue to stay involved politically. Turkey is not getting anymore liberal (though it should be acknowledged that the AKP gov't have done more for improving the condition of minorities in the past four years than the previous 80 odd years; though that isn't saying much and they are probably on the way out and perhaps that is /was the most liberal Turkish gov't we have ever witnessed/will witness).

I would love to see Asia Minor returned to it's rightful owners; Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, etc but I do not think it will happen (it is my dream too)...unless...

        several things must happen:

        1. Turkey does not get in the EU (which would further divide Turkey from Europe)
        2. The Armenian Genocide is recognized in the US, UK, and Germany (This would anger Turkey and based upon their own rhetoric, they would cut off relations with those countries or seriously disengage)
        3. A wider M.E. war takes place eventually polarizing all the regional players/outside powers/interested parties into two sides: Christians vs. Muslims (caught between Christian Europe and Muslim ME, Turkey will have to make a difficult choice.)
        4. The situation between Kurds and Turks continues to deteriorate/Civil War (limited language rights or not, this situation is not getting any easier and soon the Kurds will have their own state in what was N. Iraq)
        5. The ever present Russian factor (they have the foresight to bide their time)

        Let's discuss...
General Antranik (1865-1927): “I am not a nationalist. I recognize only one nation, the nation of the oppressed.”

Joseph/SoSarkissian - I'm not sure that either of you two understood my points )which were entirely sarcastic and attempting to make a point).

But Ok - perhaps on a more serious note -

With Bush being lame duck, Turkey already in a bit of disfavor (and with Isreal as well), and with Pelosi and the Domocrats in nominal control of Congreess - this may be the best time we have ever seen and ever will see (until 2015 when the real pressure will be on...) to get a resolution passed recognizing the Armenian Genocide. And regardless, the next step (are you listening paranoid Turks?) is to elect a President that will act on principle and punish Turkey for its failure to recognize the AG itself and who will shove Turkey's various threats (against US interests etc) right back at it. I've always said that in any situation Turkey is always hurt far worse then the US with any disruption/degradation in current relations - and this always holds true. For instance Turkey wants to suggest that by them turning away from the West (EU & US both) and joining the Muslim world or what have you - that this is more of a threat to us then to them...ha! Get real. And in fact this is the situation that will cause the greatest likelyhood of Turkish "punishment" or pennance or what have you for their atrocities against Armenians - ultimatly - for Turkey to isolate itself from the West (& Isreal) and join the Muslim camp - HA! Perhaps there is a Hell after all....

And Ok its entirely wishful thinking - this scenario (and I'm not saying that this is the best thing for Armenia or Armenians per se - or that in fact this is what we hope for - what I am saying or asking is - who should be the most fearful of this course? The Turks themselves obviously - so let them threaten - and demand that they change and accomodate - not the other way around. Again thouogh it is wishful thinking to believe that the US or that US leaders will ever come around to view things in this manner. Just as it is perhaps still wishful (but at least within the realm of plausibility) that the Congress could indeed pass an AG resolution at all. So we run before we walk.

Oh and as for the Russians entering into the equation...well..talk about deals with the Devil....while they might be some sort of final resort in terms of defense of Armenia proper - I don't see how they factor in otherwise - nor would I ever hope for them to do so.

In the event of geopolitical instability and doomsday military scenarios, Armenia is more likely to be liquidated rather than gain new lands via annexation.
