  • Marriages between Armenians and non-Armenians

I a 27 year old male for Sydney, Australia. At university I studies political science and as it happens I conduct a research paper on the Armenian Genocide. It was deeply disturbing to see how the international community has let the Armenian people down for decades. As a Persian I was proud to see Iran has been Armenians closet ally. Anyway as life would have it I fell in love with an Armenian girl in the year 2005 only to find out that I was her parent’s “worse nightmare”. Marrying a non Armenian is bad enough her father said but marrying a Muslim is contributing to the white Genocide. Is this a view shared by many Armenian or are they just a minority?

Welcome to the forum Persian. I don't speak for everyone here, but my opinion/understanding is that this expectation that an Armenian will marry an Armenian is not very widespread in the nation. We'll not even address the issue for those inside Armenia since one has few choices other than Armenians. Outside though, on average it seems that Armenians assimilate quicker than many other nations - marriages with partners from outside the Armenian community included.

My Aunt actually married a Persian from Tehran named "Jafar". My Uncle is a great man, a loving and caring father, and we all adore him.

In my own family ever since the great-grandparents fled the Armenian Genocide to settle in the U.S. there has been blanket freedom to marry whoever you choose, and many marriages to non-Armenians have taken place. Both my sister and I dated muslims, I dated a Jew, etc. we've had total freedom in that regard. Of course when it came down to it - I chose to marry an Armenian - and am very glad I did.

Probably very common that marrying a muslim would be frowned upon, to say the least!

Most religions require marriage within that religion, look at the self-perpetuating Roman Catholic Church.
What were your parents' views on your dating an Armenian? Are you still with your girl?
