Originally posted by bell-the-cat View PostMutki is the name of a district of Mush province, and has a district capital of the same name. Kavakbasi is a little village at some considerable distance to the west of Mutki.
I suspect that there will be no such village (under any name) on period maps because the entire valley there has been recently flooded by a dam and Kavakbasi is sited at the very edge of the water. So it is probably a new village founded to replace ones flooded by the dam. I'll check some old maps to see if there is an older settlement there or near there.
I know of Kavakbasi because it would be on the road (if a road exists around the new lake) to an Armenian monastery called Surb Alberikvank that I had intended to try to visit some years ago. This remote area was actually part of Armenian Sassun - so if these human remains exist, they are probably Armenian.
The valley that is now flooded by a dam is named "Khoit" on old maps, the river that runs thorough it is called the "Khoit dere", but is called the "Ro" downstream from the valley. I can't identify exactly which village might be Kavakbasi. Three villages are close to the location: Sin on a 1940 map - spelt Shir on a 1920 map, Tap (1940) / Tep (1920), or Alahik (1940) / Alakh (1920).Plenipotentiary meow!

Actually I don't think you're too far off the mark. But instead of fearing the Turkish military, its the fear of Turkey's economy, or at least the lack of access to it. From what I hear from Ter-Petrossian, he seems to be willing to trade the lives of 1.5 million murdered Armenians in exchange for favorable trading conditions. While he has been chided for this, I think there is an element of truth to this opinion. I feel that most Armenians would prefer to escape from poverty rather than to achieve justice. But don't confuse this with thinking that the citizens of the RA don't think genocide occured. While this is disappointing to me, I cannot blame the citizens and govt. of Armenia entirely, considering I myself live comfortably in the US.

I don't know about that. Armenia fears war with Azerbaijan much more than war with Turkey. The reason is the CSTO, of which Armenia is a member. This treaty, and the fact that Russians guard the Armenian Turkish frontier means that Turkish Aggression would bring Russia into play, which, as you alluded to, has the largest military in Europe. Russia, however, has an unstated policy which essentially stipulates that Armenia must take care of itself if war were to break out with Azerbaijan.

Ceremony of hatred
At the independence ceremony of Erzurum Aşkale yesterday, Armenian gangs executed an Imam and Turkish gangs killed Armenians as a theatrical play. Some of the actors swore.
The theatrical show was held in front of the district governorship office. Armenian gang leader got the Imam executed hearing the sounds of Muslim call for prayer. Then the Armenian gang of actors raided houses and stabbed the babies one by one. The theatrical show representing the past events ended with Turkish soldiers coming to rescue the village.
Execution is a play; while shock is real

At the celebration of the 90th anniversary of Erzurum Aşkale's gaining independence from Armenian gangs, a theatrical show was displayed. Armenians executed an Imam and Turkish gangs killed Armenians in the theatrical play. Governorship employees acted as Armenian gang members. Armenian gang leader got the Imam executed hearing the sounds of Muslim call for prayer. Then the Armenian gang of actors raided houses and stabbed the babies one by one. The theatrical show representing the past events ended with Turkish soldiers coming to rescue the village. The kids watching the celebrations were shocked as the execution of the Imam was so real and it lasted for about five minutes. The specialists warned about the event: "such execution scenes leave marks on the consciousness of kids."

Turkey must come to terms with its history.
There is no shred of doubt that the Genocide happened.
The Armenian, Pontic and Assyrian Christians Genocides will forever haunt the turkish people and the turkish government.
This is not an age prepared to mix blood with water under the bridge.
If turkey is ever to stand unencumbered on the global stage, it must accept its grisly past and make amends.
