Eastern vs Western Armenian Dialect

I was recently engaged in a discussion over the Armenian dialect. A friend of mine was insisting on the fact that the western dialect is the proper armenian dialect. Whereas the eastern dialect is more slang.

I'm looking for some studies, or facts around this. Seeing that the forum content is rather intellectual, I was hoping that one of you can point me in the right direction.

From what I understand, RA speech is mainly Yerevan dialect, similar to Hillbillies in the States, quoted from my fair wife, born & raised in Yerevan.
