  • Evidence of Pan Turanist Ideology

While getting some testimonies of the genocide for Saco, I came across one by
Andreas Yessayi Gulanian, where he mentions the impact of Turanic ideals on the Young Turks :

Memories of Eyewitness-Survivors of the Armenian Genocide

Thanks again Pedro, I'm eternally grateful. When I read different testemonies and I can't help but ask what the Turks feel when they read them. The ones that call th Genocide all a lie.

The ones that don't believe in the genocide read the hate which inspires them in turn to plot to destroy whatever democracy and freedom of speech they have in their country. What else? As for the others I don't know...

That's obvious but what I meant was what do they understand when they read all that? Do they think it's still a tall tale? Or maybe that we're just dissing their grandfathers? I've always asked myself what do parents tell their 5 year old children when they ask them about the Genocide after hearing about it at school. Just saying it was a lie won't always work. When I asked, I got a very good understanding, got examples, got descriptions, details, etc. What do they get?

What do they get? It differs time to time, person to person. Let me sum the answers up:

          - Armenians were rebels and they were 5th column of Russia, so compulsorily government exiled/deported them.

          - Actually they killed Turks, by assaulting Turkish villages (they present some photos, testimonies and evidents of massgraves).

          - They wanted to establish an independent state.

          - They were cat's paw of Western imperialists to divide the country.

          etc etc

Good points everyone. There are probably people who restrict anyone from talking about it at home or simply say everything was a lie and move on.

Actually it doesnt happen in that way. Because, there happens conflict of generations. Generally, educated sons/daughters ask their parents "What happened in 1915" question. Mainly fathers give the answers such as i mentioned, but children cannot feel satisfied if they are curious and clever enough. So parents need to persuade children but they cannot in most cases.

In my case, it happened so too. Still me and my father, we are discussing (and towards the end of conversation: argue) the Genocide. He cannot restrict me or knows he cannot slide over.

In such discussions, my father always tells that Armenians in his grandparents village killed and raped Turks. And always i respond "this doesnot imply that a genocide didnot happen".

Often in these situations the truth is secondary dependent on which side of the line you're positioned. That positioning is not always of your own doing either. Our position is determined by our place of birth and parentage, only when we enter education and develop ourselves can we begin to make our judgements. Reading posts by our turkish members, you can nearly feel the frustration they have with the system they're living in. I don't know where Utopia is to be found, certainly not in the UK but it seems we are far better placed than many.
Saco, I would imagine that in many households in turkey and Armenia people are too busy making ends meet, paying bills etc. for it to be a major talking point. It's quite a privelige to have access & time to this and other forums.
