Kurdish MP's vote casting in Swedish Parliament

12:02 / 03/12/2010Vote of Swedish MP of Kurdish origin Gulan Avci was crucial in the adoption of Armenian Genocide bill by Swedish Parliament, though Liberal People’s Party opposed the motion.

In an interview with Firat agency, Avci said that she opposed her party and voted for the bill so that Turkey faces the history. “Turkish Kurds are under menace of Genocide, thus recognition of Genocide by Riksdag is of major significance. I knew that my vote will be decisive and necessary. It is time for Turkey to recognize committed past genocides and massacres. Many states consider Turkey a country that committed a Genocide. This is the first time, that Swedish Parliament recognized Genocide of Pontic Greeks, Assyrians and Syrians,” Avci noted.

March 11, majority of Swedish parliament voted for the resolution describing the mass killings of Armenians and other Christian minorities in modern Turkey by the end of World War I as genocide. Bill on Armenian Genocide recognition has been proposed by three oppositional parties: Social Democratic, Green and Left. Resolution was adopted with 131 against 130 votes.

Later Turkey recalled its Ambassador from Stockholm and cancelled Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Sweden scheduled for March 17 after the adoption of Armenian Genocide Resolution by Riksdag.

Majority of Swedish parliament voted in favor of resolution describing the mass killings of Armenians and other Christian minorities in modern Turkey by the end of World War I as genocide, Swedish media say.

Thus, parliament went against the government, having the red-green opposition suggesting the resolution for discussion. The non-socialist parties threw the proposal reasoning that politicians are not going to write the history. However, a number of conservative MPs voted for the resolution, which resulted in motion passing by a casting vote — 131 against 130.

“Now I assume that Foreign Minister Carl Bildt respects the decision of Parliament and to the Turkish leadership position in front of Parliament, that what happened in 1915 was a genocide. There have been reports that Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan visit Stockholm next week. If it is true, I think it goes without saying that Bildt will address the issue,” said Riksdag member Hans Linde.

According to the experts, it may have been up to 2.5 million people lost their lives, while Turkey negates that there was a genocide.

STOCKHOLM, March 11 (Reuters) - Swedish parliament approved on Thursday a resolution that brands the killing of Armenians by Ottoman forces during World War One as genocide.
A U.S. House of Representatives committee approved last week a nonbinding measure condemning killings that took place nearly 100 years ago, in the last days of the Ottoman Empire.
Turkey was infuriated and recalled its ambassador after the announcement.
Swedish television programme Aktuellt reported that the Turkish ambassador in Stockholm would be recalled to Ankara.
The issue of the Armenian massacres is deeply sensitive in Turkey. Turkey accepts that many Christian Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks but vehemently denies that up to 1.5 million died and that it amounted to genocide -- a term employed by many Western historians and some foreign parliaments.

Isnt it interesting that for all the rightwingers crawling in this forum it is actualy the left wingers who are pushing for justice and our cause. I like what spain is doing because it recognizes facts as facts and does not put up obsticles while doing it.

Spanish Parliament to consider Armenian Genocide Resolution

15:59 / 03/11/2010The motion on Resolution on Armenian Genocide was introduced to Spanish Parliament. The sponsors of the document are representatives of Republican Left of Catalonia and three MPs of Initiative for Catalonia Greens.

They also proposed to include in the resolution a provision that Spanish Government supports Armenia-Turkey normalization process and calls EU to back Yerevan-Ankara dialogue.

February 26, the Catalonian Parliament, unanimously voted for the Armenian Genocide approval.

Swedish Parliament enters into discussions on Genocide Resolution

Bill on Armenian Genocide recognition has been proposed by three oppositional parties: Social Democratic, Green and Left. The resolution condemns Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire as well as genocides against other nations.

DeutscheWelle reported that Swedish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee offered to reject the bill.

Resolutions on Armenian Genocide recognition have been proposed in previous years, but were always thrown. This time, Social Democrats, who used to vote against the bills, unanimously voted for it last November.

178 Swedish MPs represent the Government, while 171 are left-wingers. Thus, the bill will be rejected if the pro-government MPs vote against it. However, three of fifteen MPs who put forward the resolution are members of pro-governmental parties.
