A few years ago I read in a book that the Ottoman Turks threatened to massacre the Ottoman Christians as a deterrent to stop Russia invading Ottoman territories. I think this may have been when the Russians were closing in on Constantinople in the 1877-8 war. I can't remember what that book was.
