  • What's the best Armenian Genocide documentary to show to a bunch of college students?

My friend is organizing a film festival at his university that focuses on international issues and is compiling a list of films and documentaries to screen. He already said to give him on on the AG but I'm not sure which to give. I immediately thought of "Screamers" which was done by Carla Garabedian and System of a Down, but then again it is slightly outdated given that the American politicians it deals with are of the Bush Administration and System of a Down aren't as popular as they used to be.. I still like it though.

So do you guys think I should send in "Screamers" or another documentary that takes a more historical approach? For instance also from 2006 was a PBS documentary called "The Armenian Genocide" narrated by hollywood celebrities such as Orlando Bloom, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Jared Leto, Julianna Margulies and Natalie Portman.

The PBS documentary was pretty good if I remember. It was more historical and has a debate at the end between two denialists (including Justin McCarthy and some Turk) and two people that acknowledge the genocide (I think it was Balakian and Akcam) so that should be suitable for a college setting.

LOL, if you want to impress them with a barrage of celebrity narrators you should use Goldberg's PBS documentary. "See, y'all? Legolas recognizes the Armenian Genocide!"

But really, I think the reason most of those actors contributed was because their agent is Aleen Keshishian.

Just use YouTube and pick the documentary you feel is best. Most of the documentaries are up there. Aghet is supposed to be a good one, but I think it's in German (do they mind subtitles?). Personally, I'm not very interested in a broad overview of the genocide and would like to see more documentaries that employ local and microhistorical approaches.

thanks for the suggestions, I guess I'll have to watch them all to decide. Maybe I can just try to convince them to show both

No such documentary exists if your criteria is "good". "Best" would be just the best of a bad lot.

I believe the German documentary titled (Aghet: a Genocide) is a good one. it shows German archives and testimonies.
