  • Public Meeting In Bremen Devoted To The Armenian Genocide

    [Translated with SYSTRAN. Siamanto.]

The first public meeting in Bremen devoted to the Armenian genocide shows the limits of this kind of debate.

    GERMANY, Tuesday July 5, 2005 - ARMENEWS.
Under was the auspices of the mayor of Bremen Henning Scherf (SPD) and on the initiative of Islamic organizations, mosqué Turkish and various Turkish associations held Thursday June 30 at the house of the Hackfeld consul the first public discussion whose title was " what arrived at the Armenians in 1915? "
Qualified of " first stage " by the mayor of the commune, the meeting proceeded without clashes but emphasized the work of information which must still be carried out. The evening marked certainly a new departure but it showed that the way will be long before Turkish people are correctly informed.
It should be said that dice their arrival the 500 listeners entered the sharp one of the subject. An exposure entitled " on other side of the medal " was to prove that in fact the Armenians had made a genocide with regard to the Turkish people.
Composed equally of members favorable or hostile with the recognition of the Armenian genocide each speaker defended his point of view.
The consul general from Turkey in Hanover Birgen Kesoglu thus for its part declared that " the task of each country is to draw from the lesson of the history. The Turkish republic has always thus acts "evoking the events of 1915 of" tragedy "
Indicating that more than one million people had found death in 1915 Henning Scherf, mayor of Bremen, declared " that must remain in our reports " and thus defended the realization last April of a monument dedicated to the Armenian genocide in his commune, first monument set up in Germany. He stressed that the admission of its own history for Germany of post-war period was a condition so that it is allowed in the international community then addressing itself to the consul general " You say that one should prevent from wounding the feelings, I say that one must prevent the nationalist feelings ".
The interpreter Sahin Ali Soeylemezoglu de Duisbourg and the Turkish lecturer Mustafa Çolak for their part denied with force that there actually was a genocide of the Armenians. According to M.Çolak the persons in charge are the Christian missionaries who disseminated incorrect information on " the alleged genocide " quoting Johannès Lepsius in particular. M.Soeylemezoglu suggested that the insufficient work of the service of information of the Bundestag concerning the resolution adopted recently on the massacres of the Armenians is responsible for the current situation in Germany " Of other nations can have a problem with their history. We do not have any "it concluded under the applause.
Curiously even the speakers favorable to a recognition of the Armenian genocide had the right to at least polished applause. Thus Otto Luchterhandt of the university of Hamburg stressed that this question " was henceforth examined in Turkey on a level ever reached " even if for him " there is not doubt that it acts of a genocide " and that " this chapter should not be revisited only by historians " as the Turkish government requires it.
When with the Armenian publicity agent Raffi Kantian it stressed that there are in Turkey even many historians who prononçent from now on Turkish government differently.
Only false note of the evening when one of the organizers reversed the table of books of the editor Klaus Donat.M.Donat had spread out - with the permission of a collaborator of the house, but without agreement of the organizers - books devoted to the genocide of the Armenians. M.Donat and two other people carried felt sorry for for aggravated assault.
With the journalists coming to request it the exit of the meeting the mayor of Bremen has concluded " a good beginning and a first opened discussion, we must draw some the correct conclusions for the future ". " We cannot resign in front of such questions " even if this last regrets the demonstration envisaged on July 2 in front of the central station by hostile Turkish with any recognition and whose slogan will be " now, that is enough ".

    ALLEMAGNE, mardi 5 juillet 2005 – ARMENEWS.
