Let's "Light the Night"

The organisations Armenica and ArmeniaDiaspora would hereby like to inform you about their world wide campaign of "Light the Night". The content of the campaign is stated below and further information can be viewed at http://www.armenica.org/light-the-night

On the eve of April 24th, we encourage all to "Light the Night" by lighting a candle through the night of the 23rd and into the morning of the 24th, in remembrance of the 1.5 million souls that fell victim to the annihilation machine of the Ottoman Empire. Each lit candle placed on the window sill will represent a soul lost throughout the years of 1915 and 1923. Together, let's "Light the Night"; let's vow to remember, to never forget, and to pursue justice and peace for all humanity.

The "Light the Night" campaign started last year in connection to the 90th remembrance day of the Armenian Genocide and we wish to continue this campaign hoping that it will be a permanent tradition. Last year the campaign received wide TV and radio coverage in Armenia and this year Printinfo has volunteered to contribute to the campaign by printing flyers free of charge for distribution within Armenia. We hope that you aslo could join us in this tradition.

I understand demonstrations, I understand letter writing campaigns, I understand producing DVDs and films about the event. I understand holding commemoration gatherings and such. I even understand collecting email addresses on a website

I simply cannot understand the point of lighting candles at home. What is it supposed to accomplish? Seems like it is only an effort for our entertainment.

I think it's a good idea, especially for those who do not live in armenia. it could be like our own little Tsitsernakaberd in our homes. And maybe, for once in a year, we could be directly connected with each other (including those far away) through a common event other than protesting. Maybe for a day we can pray with the rest of our families instead of by ourselves. Sad time of the year but at least we can improvise with what we've got and go to the monuments here as well.

Wow, i wish my family stayed in armenia. Life would have been so much better and happier, no matter how poor or rich we would be. money's not what really matters.

I'm really getting mad about the continuous ignorance of the Armenian Genocide... I wish I could go back in time and record most of the events that took place in the Armenian Genocide! Then we'll see who's lying! Ապուշ թուրքեր...

I can only partially agree with you. Let's look at it this way.

What is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) problems that Armenians have faced not only nowadays but for more then 8 centuries? They have always had a hard time standing and working together. That's the main reason why Armenia is in such a rediculous state today.

We have to learn to work together and these candles provide us with a perfect opportunity to do so. If all the Armenians in Yerevan alone placed candles below their windows, that would not only wonderfully lit up the streets, it would also show the world that our voices are one ... that we stand together. Armenians from all over the world have the chance to be together now no matter where they are and I thank whoever first got this idea. I can literally give you pages of good reasons why this is all worth our time.

I don't see why it's just an effort for our entertainment. I mean, no offense, but right now we should be willing to do anything that can get our past heard around the world and that can most importantly bring us together. Lighting candles is a very smart idea because there are Armenians ALL OVER THE WORLD and if all of us do light one or two, many people from all over will see us and hopefully our past, as well. And even if they don't, these candles will bring us together and I think we need that more then ever before.

Unfortunately Elia jan, I don't think your idea would work too well because we have tons of evidence already and we can all see how TUrkey continues to deny it's hellish past. The answer to our problems doesn't lie in evidence any longer, I'm afraid. We have to take a different approach. The New Generation in Turkey is what frightens the Turkish gov. nowadays more then anything or anyone because if they figure out that they've been cheated for a century, a revolution will take place in Turkey ... a very big one, mind you. That's why you can see the 301 article flying around. That's why you can see the Turkish gov. shivering when the AG is even slightly mentioned on TV or anywhere else. Turkey's New Generation is the gov. weakest spot and right now you can already see many people thinking differently and Armenians around the world shouldn't ignore that and continue to look at all Turks as enemies. That's the WORST thing we can do right now.
