  • Canadian-Armenians are grateful

    The Gazette

    Wednesday, October 26, 2005

Re: "Armenian Genocide Monument in 2007" (Gazette, Oct. 25). Since 1980, the Quebec National Assembly has unanimously supported every motion to commemorate the Armenian genocide.

On Dec. 10, 2003, an Act to Proclaim Armenian Genocide Memorial Day became law in Quebec. On April 21, 2004, the Canadian Parliament acknowledged the Armenian genocide of 1915 and condemned it as "a crime against humanity."

In light of Canadian sensitivity to the well-documented and irrefutable facts of the Armenian genocide, it is fitting that Canadians of Armenian origin demonstrate their gratitude to the government and to the people of Quebec by offering a monument in the province's capital.

To paraphrase a well-known expression in prayer: next year in Turkey.
