Upcoming Film: Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road is a film by Academy-Award winning director Sam Mendes, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett. The screenplay is written by Justin Haythe and based upon the novel by Richard Yates.

The film is set in 1955, and revolves around Frank and April Wheeler, self-assured Connecticut suburbanites who see themselves as very different from their neighbors in the Revolutionary Hill Estates. April is an aspiring actress who yearns to move to Paris, while Frank copes with toiling away at a corporate job he despises by drinking too heavily and engaging in an affair with a co-worker. The couple's marriage slowly dissolves into an endless cycle of bitter arguments and jealous recriminations.

This will mark the first time DiCaprio and Winslett are starring in a film together since their blockbuster hit Titanic in 1997. This will also be the first time Kate Winslett has worked with her husband, Sam Medes.

I provided an HD download of the trailer. It's quite amazing and I'm really looking forward to this film. DiCaprio is definitely my favorite actor, and I love Winslett's work as well. Sam Mendes is a beautiful filmmaker and I have no doubt this film will be executed properly. There is so much emotion is this trailer, especially towards the end. This film is a testament to why I love filmmaking; capturing real life emotions and displaying them on screen.

Revolutionary Road will be released on December 26, 2008.

I haven't read the novel by Richard Yates and can't really decide if I want to. Usually, I would love to read a novel before seeing the film. In the case of this film, however, it's some of my favorite cast and crew working together. Their ideas will be so fresh and original, especially with the Oscar talks, I know it might be a much more memorable event if I go in fresh myself.

I can't stop watching this trailer. When I first heard about the film, I was fascinated because Leo and Kate were going to work together again. Their chemistry is amazing, and Leonardo is definitely my favorite actor. His ability to take on his characters is mezmorizing. I also loved the idea of having a story set in the 50s. In my opinion, the 1950s was a time where there was a certain class attached to the life in America. American cinema was just developed and had already made its fair share of classics. The way Americans spoke and dressed was so beautiful. I can only imagine what the production design of this film will be like. I love how men used to wear hats and the entire "classic" American life is so appealing.

Then again, that's exactly what this film will touch on. The idea of giving up your dreams and settling down to start a family. In the case of Frank and April Wheeler, they each gave up their dreams to get married. It will deal with their dysfunctional marriage and how they keep hope alive. The tagline describes it best, "How do you break free without breaking apart?" Thomas Newman's score along with the cut of the trailer is so beautiful. If you've seen it, near the end, when Winslett asks "Just because you've got me trapped doesn't mean you can bully me..." and DiCaprio snaps and says "YOU! IN A TRAP!" The next cut is of him hitting the car door with his hand and it flows so beautifully with the score.

I certainly cannot wait and I hope ths film gets the nominations it deserves.

I’m not allowed to get into my thoughts on “Revolutionary Road” in any real detail yet, but we’ve got a real Best Picture contender on our hands, one driven to that status by a dynamic blend of powerhouse performances that won’t likely be forgotten any time soon.

Leonardo DiCaprio, joined on stage right now with director Sam Mendes and the cast for a post-screening Q&A (in front of a massive SAG audience that appears to have enjoyed the film), just described his response to the material as like being “a fly on the wall…I felt embarrassed.” I think that comment sums up both the power of Richard Yates’s incredibly truthful novel and the apparent success with which it has (finally) been brought to the screen.
