Re: The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Instead of making my predictions now, I'll wait until I see the 8 or so films in my list. I'll get around to that once school ends next week.

I don't really care for the Golden Globes but it's interesting to see how it'll turn out. I'm disappointed The Dark Knight received only one nomination. I can predict a handful for the Oscars. I'm very glad to see Vicky Cristina Barcelona getting a couple nominations, as well as In Bruges.

I hope In Bruges wins... was truly a great movie.

Re: The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Frank Langella must win. I haven't seen the film, but he's so awesome and has been ignored for too long. Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradd Pitt only have the fangirl vote and Mickey Rourke is an outsider. Sean Penn is the obvious choice; his film and role scream for attention but he's already won before for a lesser performance -- these awards aren't really based on merit -- so I say give it to Langella.

Tom Cruise? Really? Okay. And Downey, Jr.? Are these really two of the best supporting male performances of the year? More starfarking.

I'm so glad Rebecca Hall was nominated, even though I think Sally Hawkins or Meryl Streep will end up winning.

Clint, again? Is it some sort of sin if he doesn't get nominated for these things? Especially this year for his boring score and awful "Gran Torino" song?

Where are all those nominations for The Dark Knight?

Golden Globes really doesn't matter, as I said, so I'm not surprised there are no nominations for The Dark Knight and really nothing for Milk. No Best Picture? Surprising.

You're right about Tom Cruise. Who really cares for his cameo? I think all actor awards should go to Leo but that's just my opinion. Forget the fangirl vote, he's no longer in that category. People (you) need to wake up and realize he's been giving some outstanding performances and it's time he gets recognized.

He hasn't given a performance that I would consider to be outstanding, but came close in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

I wasn't impressed with his only Golden Globe-winning performance as Howard Hughes in The Aviator, and felt he was miscast. Fine -- Cate Blanchett didn't look like Hepburn, either, but at least she was a good enough technician to convince the audience, perhaps for a short while, that she was Kate Hepburn. True, DiCaprio was portraying an enigmatic recluse who people still don't really get, but the entire viewing time, I just felt that it was Leonardo-trying-to-play-Hughes I was watching on the screen. Don't even get me started on Jude Law's Errol Flynn. Jason Robards, who portrayed a much older Howard Hughes in Melvin and Howard, was far more convincing, IMO -- and he's only in the film for about twenty minutes!

Am I being biased? Yes. I haven't even seen Revolutionary Road. I already noted that these awards groups aren't based on merit, so I don't want DiCaprio to win, no matter how great he is in the film. And he is not as due for this as Langella.

Oh well, the Academy is more likely to give it to Langella anyway if he's nominated. They perfer older actors and Leo's too new in the game.

I really think Leo's given some great perfromances. The Departed, being one of them. Blood Diamond was great as well. I think he was great as Howard Hughes. Miscast? He certainly looked the role and did an amazing job. I don't think he fell short, the performance was right in front of your eyes and I think people understood exactly the type of man Hughes was, based on the picture.

By the way, no nomination for Blanchett in Curious Case? Wow.

Re: The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards

I didn't think he looked right for the role at all (although Sandy Powell's costumes helped). How about when he portrays the middle-aged Hughes? That mustache? It was so bad. And I always thought one of the primary complaints regarding The Aviator was that viewers didn't understand anything about Howard Hughes based on the picture? It's probably why the Academy selected the safe, straightforward melodrama Million Dollar Baby as Best Picture that year, despite giving The Aviator all the technical awards and Martin Scorsese being the sentimental favorite. Its production values were top-notch and Blanchett was fine, but there was nothing there.

Leo is too new in the game, which is why I don't see why he should be recognized at the Golden Globes this year, especially since he's already won one before?

I haven't seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, either.

Re: The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Honestly, I don't care for the Golden Globes. It's really dependant on what you think of the Hollywood Foreign Press, probably. Do they know anything about giving awards? Maybe they do. They two filmmakers I interviewed for Woody are Hollywood Foreign Press winners.

I respect the Academy's decision more. Again, I don't agree with every decision they make. I think the awards they give out generally mean more to everyone. To them, it's what counts. I think Leo deserved Best Supporting Actor for The Departed considering it was an ensemble piece although I see why he didn't want to receive the nod.

I have a feeling I know what films are going to win this year, for the Oscars. The Globes are really weird, nobody can predict their winners. Just look at their nods. I'll make a list soon, I just want to see the major releases before I give everything to Leo and Co.
