My favorite movie would have to be the one about dancing all hip hop street style. You know the movie I'm talking about. It's the one where the pretty white girl, or guy, moves into the inner city and is exposed to new cultures (i.e. black people). This person is outcast at first and hated on by the disenfranchised black guy but then a convenient plot twist happens and they like each other enough to team up and beat the crap outta their oppressors, and society as a whole, using nothing but their interpretive dance skills. Man I love that phucking movie! What's it called again?

The Matrix

My favorite is not that old, but it really made me realize how looking to something or someone to tell you "how I should live my life" is incredibly stupid.

It's hard to pick just one movie, because as One-Way said, there are many phenomenal films that reach you on different levels. But if I had to pick one, it would definitely be the original Matrix because it went well beyond just mere film quality to me. I had already begun this "unplugging" process long before I had seen this film, so when I finally watched it, it took on a very different meaning for me than it did for most others, who either saw it as just another "cool kung fu/action flick", or if they're "deep", saw it as a commentary on religion, if not a sci-fi version of the Bible. There is no question that the religious references were intentional, but for me, it went much deeper than that. In almost every single line throughout the movie, I heard symbolism for how every single aspect of how we live our day-to-day lives is programmed into us since birth in many different ways, and by many different means, and eventually becomes "that's just the way it is". We have never known another way since birth (thus creating the mental prison they reference), and therefore, the thought of questioning how or why we live our lives the way we do never crosses our minds. Even if it did, most people NEED a preset programming to comfort and shield them from the terrifying vulnerability of NOT knowing or having a purpose.

It is amazing how many different ways this movie was interpreted. To give you an extreme example, this movie was banned in several Middle Eastern countries for "promoting Christianity", while it was CONDEMNED in many other nations for being "AGAINST Christianity". To me, it was a sci-fi rendition of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and the many different levels of consciousness that one can exist in.

Your specific beliefs have nothing to do with the concept in general of looking to someone, or something for direction on how to live life. You stated your opinion in naming your favorite movie, and I'm stating mine, and that is ALL this thread is for. If you want to have a theological discussion about WHY that concept is, or isn't stupid, I suggest you start another thread for it. This isn't the place for such a discussion, as anything outside of movies would be way off topic.

Crimson, I enjoyed your thoughts on Matrix. It's a strong film and regarded as one of the most impressive in recent years, and your opinion on why is a good example of its influence.

I assure you that each film in the series does not run 4 hours or so.

The Godfather runs 2 hours and 55 minutes.
The Godfather II runs 3 hours and 20 minutes.
The Godfather III runs 2 hours and 42 minutes.

The Godfather II has the longest running time, which is still 40 minutes short of a 4 hour length. The Godfather and The Godfather III both have running times of under 3 hours. Thus, it is illogical to assume that each film in the series is 4 hours or so, considering that neither one of these films runs longer than 3 and a half hours.
