  • Where have the highschool movies gone?

The 80's and 90's were filled with high school themed classics, but as far as the 00's go, all I can think of are

Pretty Persuasion, Super Bad, Mean Girls, and possibly Donnie Darko, though that belongs in it's own genre, and alot of people haven't seen D.Darko or Pretty Persuasion either. High School Musical movies don't count as real high school movies either. So have I just some how missed them or are HS movies scarce as far as this decade goes?

Yeah, they don't seem to make many of those high school movies anymore. Mean Girls was more of a parody. I think, like teen pop, it pretty much left us post-9/11. We expect serious stuff now. Probably one of the reasons why superhero franchises have become darker and grittier, what with The Dark Knight's political undertones and Robert Downey Jr. vs. the Taliban aka Iron Man.

Don't worry, they'll remake your favorite high school themed classics soon. That, or turn them into Broadway musicals.

Don't forget that television still has tons of high school themed programming.

I agree w/you on the post 9/11 bit. "Pretty Persuasion" was actually a serious film filled with dark humor, which is why I think it never made it big, though it's one of my favorite films.

Well musicals, like most movie remakes, can either end up fairly decent or horrendously bad

I can't deal with hs themed shows though. To many seasons, to much drama. Movies are concise compared to shows, and hs shows never could have the same themes. There could never be a "Heathers" tv show, especially after columbine

They go where the money is. The audience's demands are changing.
