Re: Jim Morrison: Poet?
He certainly is a poet, and his work is beautiful even if the quality of the work as art is dubious. In my opinion, his writing made for better lyrics than it made for poetry; the former relies less on carefully formed structure, and Morrison wasn't too particular about that aspect of his writing.
An interesting project that might appeal to some music fans: a little while back an album was released called "Prayer Cycle 2: Path to Zero," to support the anti-nuclear organization Global Zero. It features Sting, Korn's Jonathan Davis, Serj Tankian of SOAD, Robert Downey Jr. and spoken word from old Morrison tapes.
A rather beautiful collection of songs; not sure whether to call it an album or an EP. The Davis track is particularity lovely. It takes you places.

Re: Jim Morrison: Poet?
Its true that he’s not a great poet in the classical sense due to the lack of any structure. But this is also one of his strengths, as it enables him to tie fragments of content in an abstract way. I remember seeing an interview of The Doors in which Morrison said that his aim with the lyrics was to conjure up the subconscious of the listener through abstraction. His work does seem to have a certain type of aura which strongly resonates with some people while turning others off.
I personally enjoy his work while acknowledging that he is not one of the best writers, although I can’t help but feel there is a little bit of underlying genius there. He can tie together the most random sets of ideas which can come off as deeply mysterious, spiritual, dreamy, whimsical and nonchalant all at the same time.
