  • Katie Melua's "Love Is a Silent Thief" (Parajanov)

The British Georgian singer's song is dedicated to and inspired by Sergei Parajanov. The music video is set to scenes from The Color of Pomegranates.

Melua's is not the first music video to use Parajanov's imagery:

Same video as above, but "recreated" using higher quality footage.

I seem to remember that the video was banned shortly after its release because of copyright issues.

Here is another, by the Iranian band "Kiosk":

There is also the video for Madonna's "Bedtime Story" that is a quite blatant rip-off of numerous images and ideas taken from Parajanov's films - none of which were acknowledged by either its maker or by Madonna (which is why I'm not posting a link to it here).

The Armenian pop singer Sirusho (or her director) did the same thing with the music video to her song "PreGomesh."

Have you seen the rest of his films, bell? It's a shame he spent so much of his life in prisons and that his films were subject to censorship. Some of his Soviet Armenian censors probably work at Armenia's Ministry of Culture now and promote The Color of Pomegranates whenever they can.

I've seen all the full-length films and a few of his shorter works.

I see that short film about Hakop Hovnatanian that was on youtube and that was later taken down has been uploaded again.

But could any of Parajanov's feature films be made today? It would be almost impossible to film the same things in Armenia now that most of the buildings he used as sets and backdrops are under the tight control of the Armenian Church.

And some of the scenes must have been dangerous for the actors. I tried climbing onto the roofs at Haghbat and they are actually very slippy!

Definitely not Ashik Kerib, that's for sure.

Anyway, Ashik Kerib I've only seen bits and pieces of. I've never seen Suram Fortress.
