Re: Reviews & Ratings
Chinatown
I have to watch this film again, because believe it or not, it was my first time seeing it. I admired the cinematography and direction, as well as Jack Nicholson's performance. I will need a repeat viewing to see how I ultimately feel about the film.
Rashômon
I thought this was extremely well-made, and handled very beautifully by Akira Kurosawa. Yes, it was my first time seeing it and only my second Kurosawa film, but it's a good start for such a talented filmmaker.
Pulp Fiction (Second Viewing)
I didn't grow up on this film like others, but I still enjoy watching it. It's a great little gangster film presented in a unique approach by Quentin Tarantino. What else can I say?
Inglourious Basterds (Second Viewing)
I really enjoyed this film the first time, but fell in love with its stylistic approach during the second viewing. I had seen four films that day, (Chinatown, Rashômon, and Pulp Fiction) and this film came on around 9pm. I had about 8 hours of film in me and had woke up at 5am. I didn't want the film to end because I was having so much fun with it. It's my favorite Quentin Tarantino. Oh, and he joined us for a Q&A after the film, which ended around 11:30pm and lasted until 1am. It's going in my blog, if anyone is interested.
Pride and Glory
I think I need to see a film like this so long after it's been released to appreciate it. I thought the film was very heavy-handed and directed somewhat amateurishly. Despite that, I enjoyed some of its characters, particularly Colin Ferrell and Edward Norton.
Shutter Island
I spoke about this when it was released. I think it's a love/hate film, but I thought it was very well executed and performed, with a haunting score and some memorable scenes, particularly the dream sequences. I thought the ending was great, despite what others might think.
Contempt
I really enjoyed this film because Jean-Luc Godard is a genius filmmaker. Godard's shot selections are so beautifully framed, his characters are so well defined, and his unique approach to limting us to what we see in the film is like poetry.
Summer Hours
I love the French, and French films. I thought this film was very well directed. It had some genuine performances by realistic characters, and it made us feel like we were apart of their family. It was beautiful, visually, and very engaging. I thought the last act and the ending in particular were the best parts of the film.
Far from Heaven
I'm writing about this film right now, but my review is geared toward if melodrama is possible in 2010. In short, my answer is no. Todd Haynes has crafted a beautiful film that feele like it was made in the 1950s. I thought the cinematography and performances were extremely noteworthy. It's a beautiful experiment that can hold its own as a film in the 2000s.

I actually understood but I don't think it was a movie to give it a 5/5
