The great Elvin Jones, legendary drummer (John Coltrane Quartet, Wayne Shorter, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, way too many others to name...) has passed away in Englewood, NJ. at the age of 76. It is a sad, sad day in the jazz world...
however, we must not approach this event as tragic, but instead regard his life as heroic, as Elvin was playing drums on stage with oxygen tanks right up to his last days!!!
Elvin was scheduled to perform with his group, the Jazz Machine, at this year's Festival International de Jazz de Montréal on the same day as pianist Keith Jarrett & his trio (with Jack DeJohnette & Gary Peac0ck). Seeing how all of these guys are getting quite old & tired, worn by their intermittent health problems, i was debating which of the 2 shows i would see, because i knew their touring days are numbered. i ended up buying tickets for the Keith Jarrett show, but unfortunately, this fateful turn of events makes it so that i will never regret my purchase.... & i will never forget this year.....
Rest In Peace Elvin Jones
