The Stripes are a lot rawer than most of what you hear out of Zeppelin. I can see a lot of similarity between their Elephant album and Led Zeppelin II, especially in Ball and Biscuit. When I first heard the main riff in that song, I thought I was hearing unreleased Zeppelin. Incidentally, that was early enough in Zeppelin's career that their music was still very heavily influenced by the blues.
All in all, The Stripes are a revival band. They aren't trying to do anything new. Their whole schtick is to bring rock and roll back to its roots, closer to the blues and with less production and orchestration. Some bands move forward, some move backward, and some stay in exactly the same place as everyone else. As long as they're making good music, what's the cause for complaint?
