They are pretty cool for the price range, especially for the time they came out. But honestly, if I were to get something like that now, I would probably go with a turbo charged Pontiac Solstice or a Saturn sky for about $20K less.

The $20K can then go towards a lot of crazy mods.
    this post = teh win.

This is true, but consider that the in the world mass marketing you are paying the premium because you are driving a Lotus and not a Honda. Yeah, I can buy a civic and turn it into a pocket rocket, but at the end of day I just dropped 40k on a Honda versus owning a Lotus.

But yeah, most exotic cars have hefty price tags because they know people pay for the "name" as much as the engineering that was involved. Its their business model, differentiating the product versus competing on cost.

very nice, but if I ever had the money (probably never) I would buy a Maybach + rent a driver, now that would be the life

            Virgil,

The Elise is a glorified go-cart. The inside is terribly minimalist, stripped down and not built for people 6'0" and above or who are robust. The car is quick and handles well enough. But, this is not a vehicle for every day driving especially if you need to go to the market or get a Starbucks. No luxuries. No comfort. You'll feel every bump in the road. Bring your helmet and lumbar pillow.

I'd rather buy a used Porsche.

              Yeah, ditto that last point.
