This weekend my brakes were making unusal noises. So I took it to a mechanic out here in San Fernando. He fixed my brakes & charged me $150.00 which isn't bad. But now I have another problem, when I press on the gas pedal it makes a noise as if theres a bird suffocating.

Do you guys/gals know where is a good & reliable body shop?

My uncle owns an automotive shop in Los Angeles. I used to work there for quite some time and I can vouch for their work. I'm not just recommending them because it's owned by my uncle. I wouldn't do that to a fellow buddy.

1. Does the sound change with speed?
2. Does the sound go away when you push the brake?
3. Did they install new pads?
4. What did they do to your rotors (what kind of brakes does yours have?)

Usually, some noise with new brake pads is normal. New brakes will make a little bit of noise until the pads are settled. You should take the car out, find a place with no traffic, and do this several times (maybe 10 times): Drive up to about 35 mph, brake kind of hard (not hard enough to lock the wheels) and come to a stop.

Repeat this several times to heat up your brakes and lay a fresh layer on your rotors. Of course only do this if they installed new pads.

I took it to my mechanic today because it's under warantee. But next time I have problems with my car, I'll give your uncle a call. Thanks One- Way.

4. What did they do to your rotors (what kind of brakes does yours have?)

I went to my mechanice today & they said the front rotors are bad. So I'm going to get them fixed.

If they replaced your pads, they had to machine/replace your rotors. They obviously didn't and they're only doing it now because you came back. That's not necessarily a good thing. Too many mechanics do half the job, and it looks like that's what happened in your case.

Go get new brakes and you will see lol. As for the rotors, they should have cheked those while doing your brakes, now they will charge you for unneccessery labor or a bunch for your rotors which only cost about 15 to 20 bucks usually at the part stores depending on your cars make and model.

I don't even bother to have the rotors checked or machined anymore. I just tell them to replace the rotors and pads whenever the pads are worn down to nothing Right now there is a huge round score mark on one of my front rotors but the pad is still good. It makes a scratchy sound when coming to a complete stop but I won't even bother with it until the pads are worn. I just turn the stereo full blast, doesn't bother me. I wish I had access to a garage and the time to fix mechanical problems like brakes so I know it is done right. Plus I would be able to get the high end products, put the labor money in my pocket and it would still be cheaper than the mechanic. That wouldn't be good for the economy tho . Right now I'm trying to figure out why my car failed on the NOx emissions... freaking Ontario drive clean program... going to cost me 450 bones to "try" to get the emissions down to "acceptable" levels and if it still fails it'll get a conditional pass which means I can drive it but can't sell it. I love the government!!
