US To Help Train Georgian Troops

The U.S. Embassy in Georgia says a group of U.S. Marines will arrive in the ex-Soviet nation to help train its troops, which are to be deployed alongside coalition forces in Afghanistan.

The move is likely to antagonize Russia, which has strongly spoken against any U.S. military assistance to Georgia.

The U.S. Embassy said in Friday's statement that the training will focus on skills necessary for the troops to operate in Afghanistan. A Georgian battalion is set to deploy to Afghanistan next spring.

The Embassy said the training program will start Sept. 1. It added that no weapons will be provided to the Georgians as part of the training.

The United States had helped train Georgian troops for their mission in Iraq before last August's war between Russia and Georgia.
