But there are many other factors that need to be considered as well, not the least of which is the geopolitical status-quo on earth today and cultural/sociological factors that exist between peoples.

It is well known that there has been historic distrust and rivalry between Turks and Russians. Both peoples number approximately the same, they both live in close proximity to each other and they can potentially compete for the region's natural resources and political influence. Russians already have demographic and domestic problems with Muslims and Turanians. Also, in order for any talk about a Russian-Turkish alliance to occur certain aspects of Russian and Turkish nationalism need to be put aside first.

And these elements of nationalism are fundamental parts of Russian and Turkish national identity and political outlook. Will Turkey, for example, be willing to forget about its presence in the Back Sea and the Caucasus? Is Ankara willing to forget about it's pan-Turkic aspirations in Central Asia? Is Ankara willing to forget about Azerbaijan? Is Ankara willing to down grade its alliance with various nations? Is Ankara willing to be at the mercy of Russia when it comes to acquiring oil and gas? Is Ankara willing to turn against the West? Is Ankara willing to abandon the EU in total? Perhaps. But what are the chances of these drastic changes to occur?

Besides, a Russo-Turkish alliance does not necessarily equate to a second Armenian Genocide. What interest would Moscow have in eliminating the Armenian factor in the Caucasus?

Nevertheless, for any of these fundamental changes to occur there needs to be drastic revolutionary changes within the politics and societies of both Russia and Turkey. Something close to what we are discussing almost occurred in the early stages of the Bolshevik revolution. There was an attempt by Turks and Bolsheviks to forge an alliance. Because Armenia at the time was defenseless Armenians lands were given away to Turkey and Azerbaijan in oder to facilitate this alliance. But, as we now know, the Turkish flirtation with the Bolsheviks was simply a rouse, for Ankara was looking westward.

There will always be a risk of the major nations in the region - be it Iran, Turkey or Russia - uniting at our expense. There might even be a day when Russia is not able to render us any support. And that is exactly why we need to have a capable military, a self-sustained economy, and a efficient diplomatic corps - for those rainy days when we are alone.

In short: There are many variables to this debate and the geopolitical dynamics of the region is such that a Russian-Turkish alliance is highly unlikely. As a matter of fact, there is more of a danger of us Armenians alienating Russians. We almost did that several times in the last fifteen years. We have a lot of shortsighted morons in our society and government. That is why I take anti-Russian talk by Armenians very seriously and I look at individuals such as Paruyr Hayrikyan and Levon Ter Petrosyan as longterm dangers to the Armenian Republic.
