Apparently Rep. Harman was involved in a wiretap scandal and promised to lobby the justice department in regards to two individuals from AIPAC if they would lobby Nancy Pelosi to place Rep. Harman as the head of House Intelligence Committee.

While the information is mostly from 2006, what is new, per CQ Politics is that Rep. Harman's investigation was not dropped due to "lack of evidence" but merely because Alberto Gonzales wanted her to intervene on the Warrantless Wiretapping scandal that was brewing. This explains why she and democrats in general, did not act in the face of the allegations that came out of the NYTimes regarding that program and while she, specifically, came out in full force against the NYTimes story.

Further, this also explains why Rep. Harman did not get a job with the Obama administration in the CIA or elsewhere.

According to two officials privy to the events, Gonzales said he "needed Jane" to help support the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program, which was about to be exposed by the New York Times

Further, what's more interesting is that Harman helped HOLD BACK THE STORY ON THE EVE OF THE 2004 ELECTIONS. (Personally, I think this could have helped Kerry win in 2004)

Harman, he told Goss, had helped persuade the newspaper to hold the wiretap story before, on the eve of the 2004 elections. And although it was too late to stop the Times from publishing now, she could be counted on again to help defend the program

If one wants accountability on Warrantless Wiretapping, this is where things begin. I truly hope the Obama administration is making note of these allegations and hopefully we'll see some action by Eric Holder. But still I would much rather see Rep. Harman kicked out of Congress for such actions, and I would hope Nancy Pelosi would do something about this.

Harman dodged a bullet, say disgusted former officials who have pursued the AIPAC case for years. She was protected by an administration desperate for help.

"It’s the deepest kind of corruption," said a recently retired longtime national security official who was closely involved in AIPAC investigation, "which was years in the making.

"It’s a story about the corruption of government — not legal corruption necessarily, but ethical corruption."

In fairness, Harman denies everything in the story, but with all of the sources being mentioned within the story, I don't know if that is simply believable.

ANC-PAC Endorses Marcy Winograd In Race Against Jane Harman

LOS ANGELES–The Armenian National Committee – Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) has officially endorsed the campaign of Democrat Marcy Winograd, who is challenging genocide denier Jane Harman in a primary race next year in California’s 36th Congressional District.

Unlike Harman, Winograd has pledged her full support on a variety of issues important to her prospective Armenian American constituents. Jane Harman made national headlines two years ago when she secretly wrote a letter in opposition to the Armenian Genocide resolution to the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, while still being listed as a “cosponsor” of the human rights legislation. The Los Angeles Times and others harshly criticized Harman for flip-flopping on the genocide resolution. California’s 36th Congressional District covers a portion of the South Bay in Los Angeles County, including the cities of Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, El Segundo and Venice.

“We are proud to be endorsing somebody who is honest and smart,” remarked South Bay activist Shant Baboujian. “Marcy Winograd is a model citizen. The Armenian American community looks forward to making her Congresswoman Winograd,” added Baboujian.
On October 11, 2009 a number of Armenian American leaders in the 36th Congressional District met with Marcy Winograd in
Torrance, California. The meeting provided an opportunity for community members to interact with Winograd and learn about her positions on issues ranging from education, healthcare and foreign policy matters.

Winograd will be challenging Jane Harman in the Democratic Party primary slated to be held on June 8, 2010. Winograd challenged Harman in 2006 and gave the incumbent a strong run, despite being dramatically outspent by Harman, who is one of the richest members of the U.S. Congress. Winograd is the co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Progressive Democrats of America.

Winograd has strongly endorsed the Armenian Genocide resolution pending in the 111th Congress. She has stated, for the record, “I will not only co-sponsor a resolution to recognize the Armenian genocide, I will work to bring other lawmakers on board as co-sponsors. History should never be revised to suit the needs of current geopolitical considerations; to rewrite history or to deny genocide not only insults the victims and their families, but suggests we are doomed to repeat the same crimes of ethnic cleansing and mass murder because we never fully explore the root causes of genocide.” Winograd has also expressed her clear support for continued U.S. developmental and humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabagh. She believes that the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabagh deserve the support of the United States. She also believes that the United States must intervene in Nagorno-Karabagh to ensure the safety and security of Armenians. Lastly, she believes in the right of self-determination for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabagh.

Jane Harman Resigning From Congress

Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) is expected to announce on Tuesday that she will resign from her post in congress to serve as president and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson Center, NBC News reports.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports:

Harman will succeed the current leader, former Rep. Lee Hamilton, who has led the bipartisan think tank for 12 years.

Politico's Mike Allen wrote in a tweet on Monday morning, "Wilson Center Board will make final decision on Jane Harman as new president tomorrow but she notified House of talks."

Allen reports:

She telephoned a series of colleagues on Monday morning to let them know, including House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).

Harman was preparing to send a letter to her constituents explaining her negotiations to join the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Democratic aides confirmed to the National Journal that Harman will resign her post on Tuesday.

A special election will be required to determine the congresswoman's replacement in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mitchell notes that Harman's California district reliably leans Democratic.
