For all of those who live in California, what is life like out on the West Coast? I am applying to a couple of schools (as a transfer) out there and as someone who has literally never traveled out of the New England/New York area I was wondering what it is like.

How is Los Angeles? Fresno? etc.

How are the people? We've all heard of the typical "LA" person.

Do you like it in general?

Anything you can say would be appreciated.

Life on the West Coast is ok but your asking specifically about Los Angeles or Fresno...I would say Los Angeles. Fresno is really boring, there's not much to do out there. But in LA some of the cities that are filled with shops, restaurants are Glendale, Hollywood & Pasadena....there's much more but I think those are the 3 main cities.

Southern California has by far some of the best places to live in the world. HOWEVER, it also has some of the worst places to live. I always say if you can't find it in Southern California, it probably doesn't exist (the good and the bad).

As far as Fresno, it's kind of known as the arm-pit of California. Well, maybe a bit north of the arm-pit. I can't understand how anyone can live anywhere Between north of LA and south of the Gay area (except along the coast of course). It just plain sucks except for agriculture and cows.

If you've never been out of New England, definitely get out and check out the west coast. You may love it or you may hate it but either way, you'll see something new which is always good.

Ok, enough about Fresno/Clovis. Honestly, just because your on the down side of the grapevine means nothing. Have you ever been here, or just past through and didn't see a mall big enough. Look Ace, culture, "Things to do" are all what you make it. This is a great way of life, we actually have trees in our mountains, lakes as clear as diamonds, 3 hours from the Gay Bay or LA, 2 1/2 to the coast and of course the seventh wonder of the world in my backyard, Yosemite. It only takes 20 minutes to get across town, wow,I'm really spent! Quality of life will always overrule quanity, now we don't have bars with stars, most people aren't trying to be seen or wear the right clothes. Most are humble people that still know their neighbors, wave at cops, generally make it a quiet place to live. Every town has it's Sh*$ hole areas, but wake up and get outside in your yards, bad guys don't like those kind of neighborhoods.
Now San Diego is very nice, I'd say the top overall place to live or a slower option is Napa. There's alot of small great towns doting the landscape..Good luck in your venture...

yerazhishda, let me add something to this thread.

Last night, my girlfriend and I attended the world premiere for Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona in Los Angeles. Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johannson, Penelope Cruz, Rebecca Hall and even Woody Allen showed up. Many other celebrities attended the premeire as well.

I'm studying film but I'm only a student but I think Los Angeles is the one place in the world where you can have an opportunity like this. Sure, some people may hate the people I mentioned but Allen is one of the reasons I am into film. He was probably the first filmmaker I caught onto early on in my childhood. So being able to attend the premiere to his new film is literally a dream come true. I can't believe I saw this film with all of those people and literally saw them in person in the lobby afterwards.

This is why Los Angeles is so great. You can be a nobody - a struggling student who admires a director as I do - and one day, you're invited to the premiere of the latest film. To me, it's one of the best feelings I have ever had. This is the one place I can think of that something like this is possible.
