    Woody

    Creating a thread for my second project in film class helped me keep my ideas on track. Let's use this thread as a discussion for my third and final project in film class.

    You don't have to give me suggestions but it's always appreciated. I have a very good idea of how I want to film this project. I'm pretty sure I'm going to makea film instead of a documentary. I'm planning on buying some lighting equipment and building a camera dolly for some of my shots.

    I haven't thought about the actual storyline yet. There are no requirements as far as the story goes. The film must been less than six minutes including credits. The third project is due December 4.

    I just purchased a wide-angle lens for my camera. I thought I'd use it for a specific shot I have in mind.

    I'm also looking into finally buying some lighting equipment. I think I'm going to get some regular work lights so I can use it to light my background. I'm thinking of getting some gels to color the background, however, I don't have this specific shot in mind yet.

    My sister is also going to help me build my camera dolly. She's an architecture student so she has an accessible workshop at school. I'll buy the PVC pipes while we drill the wheels into the plywood and hopefully have it finished by next week.

    Still, no specific story in mind but I have an idea. I have a good idea of how I want the film to start... with my main character speaking over black then speaking to the camera. I'm thinking relationships and an emotional break-up.

        I have a new idea.

        I would love to make a documentary about Woody Allen; I'll keep it simple with some footage of his films and interviews of filmmakers I know talking about Woody.

        The only thing is... what else can I do with it? 90% of the project must be original footage which means I can't use more than 10% of my film to show Woody's films. So besides the interviews, what else can I film to use?

          Okay, so I think I'm going to end up doing the documentary on Woody Allen.

          Many students broke our rules for project two and I'm going to do the same for this project, especially since it's much more loose. I'm going to use footage from Woody's films. I've already compiled four or five shots.

          I'm going to interview two filmmakers I'm friends with. I'll be narrating the film, talking about how Woody Allen has influenced the younger generation -- even the ones who didn't necessarily grow up with his films while they were being released. I may use pictures and quotes as well.

          We'll see how it goes.

            You could dress up like the characters in Woody Allen films and impersonate them, I did the impersonation part at least with my ex. It was the philosophical parody in Love and Death between Woody Allen's character and the wife.

            I don't know if it's worth it for your purposes though, but if you're seeking to use original footage, you could "redo" some Woody Allen skits.

              Well I'm not looking to recreate his films; just make a documentary speaking about how Woody has influenced aspiring filmmakers. I think I'll just get some footage of my friends filming their own work, and have my narration or theirs fill the screen as they talk about Woody's and their technique.

                  I bought some lights yesterday night to set-up for today's shoot. I just bought a 750 watt and 500 watt work light.

                  I met the two people I was going to interview at their place of work and began setting up. I realized I hate the way the lights made the footage look. One of the guys suggested I just use their camera (a really good one) and their boom mic (which would give good sound). I agreed at first until I decided against it. If I realized I needed extra footage of other interviews or filler shots (which I most probably do), I would have to use the same camera and that wasn't going to be possible.

                  I packed my bags and decided I might as well make another short film instead of wasting more time. Then they suggested I just shoot the interview with my camera and shoot the audio with their camera via a boom mic. I couldn't directly hook up the boom to my camera because it doesn't support mics.

                  We ended up doing it that way and I can't tell how it turned out because I'm still uploading the footage. The images aren't great but they'll be good enough to work with. Hopefully I can sync the audio with no problems.

                  I have enough coverage to make a good documentary, however I need a minimum of 20 original shots and these interviews were one shot sit down interviews. I need to find a way to work around this.

                    Let's hope yours will be better than Barbara Kopple one. It's been a while since I viewed it, but I remember not liking it much.
