  • HPV vaccine

So with all the talks of STD's in the Love and Romance section, I decided to look some up, and when I came across HPV, it said besides cervical cancer for women, HPV can lead to penile cancer in men, as well as genital warts, and anal, oral, head, and neck cancers for both genders. So why is the vaccine only marketed towards women? I mean even if men were impervious to the effects of HPV, they are obviously passing it on to women so shouldn't men have to get the vaccine as well?

    Re: HPV vaccine

That's because doctors have no ways of detecting the virus in men. That's why 80% of the sexually active population has it. Men who have it don't know about it and then they pass it to a woman. It's only detectable in women thus the vaccine is designed for women. What I know about HPV, it causes cervical cancer and genetal warts. I haven't heard about any of the ones you mentioned. Since genetal warts can be treated and cervical cancer is CANCER, the vaccine is specifically designed for women.

This was the first data released on how well the vaccine, called Gardasil, works in males. Joel Palefsky, MD, a UCSF professor of medicine, is one of the principal leaders of the study, part of an ongoing, worldwide clinical trial..................."
