Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

  • Is there a website that determines characteristics of your name?

I'm looking for a website that will help you determine characteristics of any given name. I'm not asking for the origin of the name and where it came from. I'm strictly looking to type in a name, and it tells me anything associated with that name. Some name origin websites do a good job with giving you a background of the name, while others only tell you where it originated from. Here's a good example of what I'm looking for:

    Adam
This is the Hebrew word for "man". It could be ultimately derived from Hebrew אדם ('adam) meaning "to be red", referring to the ruddy colour of human skin, or from Assyrian adamu meaning "to make".

I'm not necessarily looking for just English names, Armenian names will do as well.

I think a book will help you more then a site although I've visited a few great sites. Can't remember them at the moment. I'll let you know if I do.

you could start with urbandictionary.com. Notice I said "start".

At first glance at their facade, they seem to be quite distanced, cold, boring and sometimes 'weird' but under this, there is a person who is willing to help you with every one of his ability, a person who can talk and be talked to, understand your needs and wants as well as being able to describe his own in order to meet a compromise and most importantly, being dependable at times when you need help. The one I know of currently, has a great smile that would even make you smile at one of your days, a good listening ability, deep and emotive eyes that express more than his face which he constantly hides (besides his smile) and a great sense of humour that many would assume he didnt have. He's definitely one of the people whom many people would like once they enter an Adams' sphere where they would understand why he is the way he is.

Here is a name dictionary. www.behindthename.com

      ADAM
      Gender: Masculine

Usage: English, French, German, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, xxxish, Arabic, Biblical

Other Scripts: אָדָם (Hebrew), Адам (Russian, Ukrainian), آدم (Arabic)

Pronounced: A-dəm (English), AH-dahm (German, Dutch, Polish), ah-DAHM (Russian) [key]

This is the Hebrew word for "man". It could be ultimately derived from Hebrew אדם ('adam) meaning "to be red", referring to the ruddy colour of human skin, or from Assyrian adamu meaning "to make". According to Genesis in the Old Testament Adam was created from the earth by God (there is a word play on Hebrew אֲדָמָה ('adamah) "earth"). He and Eve were supposedly the first humans, living happily in the Garden of Eden until Adam ate a forbidden fruit given to him by Eve.
As an English Christian name, Adam has been common since the Middle Ages, and it received a boost after the Protestant Reformation. A famous bearer was Scottish economist Adam Smith (1723-1790).
      Between childhood, boyhood,
      adolescence
      & manhood (maturity) there
should be sharp lines drawn w/
      Tests, deaths, feats, rites
      stories, songs & judgements

The Bible has a list of names and what they are originated
        from.

One of my middle names (Najar) is harder:

            1. Spanish: most probably a habitational name from Najar, Alacant.
            2. Spanish: alternatively, it may be an occupational name derived from Arabic najjār ‘carpenter’.

Was there ever an Armenian name called Najarian? Because my mother thinks it was shortened from Najarian to Najar?

well, Armenians definitely would've inherited that name from working as carpenters in Arabic communities, unless najar has some Armenian or Turkish meaning too.

No idea, and its not like (as I am living in NZ) I could go to an archive in Turkey and look it up...I bet they have scrubbed the records...or alternatively listed my great grandmother as an "enemy of Turkey".

PS: My internet connection sucks at university so I may have double posted

Najar and Najjar is the same, one is turkish and the other is Arabic, means carpenter. There are lots of Armenians with the Najarian family name.

i've always assumed Najar is like Nazar in Hebrew, kind of like salam is shalom, but idk.

behind the name is good. however if you're going to use websites in general, use a few to see if their definitions match up, b/c sometimes they will have different meanings listed.

Try going with biblical names or mid to old english names, they usually have well documented meanings
