This is a very popular issue, since I think you all know that there is a "Constantinople" phobia among Turks.
Why do Turks call the city as Istanbul? Whats wrong with Constantinople?
Forget all urban legends.. here is the %100 true story:
Actually, the city's original name was "Constantinople", named after the founder of her. She was being called as Constantinople even in Ottoman times, that name is written on many documents and banknots etc.
Istanbul, also a Greek name, means "The City". It comes from "stan poli", probably the Greeks of the city were calling her by that name.
So.. why did Turks turn against the usages of Constantinapole?
It has a simple, but not-widely-known reason, even most of Turks do not know this. At the time of the last Greco-Turkish war; the King of Greek were named as "Constantin" and Greeks were using Constantinople as a refer to their 'current' king. So Turks, used Istanbul instead, as a counter-name.
It was all that simple..
Why does that Constantinople-Istanbul argument still continue today?
No reason anymore, really.
