Would you consider a career in education if your schooling was paid for?

Our country is lagging far behind other countries in education. We are also facing a tremendous shortage of teachers in the coming 10 years. Many of the top countries in education pay for the those who choose a degree in education. Some even pay those candidates while they are in college. What would make you consider a career in education.

I am afraid you are living in fantasy land.

University Tuition in the UK (2012) will be £6000 per year and £9000 for a “top” University.
Typically students have to live away from home therefore they need another £3000- £5000 for rent.
On top of that they have cost of book, living costs (food, clothing, social, travel home etc.)
Believe me if you are short of money traveling cost home becomes significant (train journey).

I understand there are some grants for low paid families which is helpful but marginal.
Parents have to chip in as well.

Bottom line is the average student comes out of University with a debt of £20,000 - £25,000 at age 22.
Although repayment is on “sympathetic “ terms they still have to be paid with interest.

The projected dept for 2012 entrants is around £30,000-£35,000.

Young people instead of thinking about settling down and start to save for the future have to pay student loans.
No wonder the average marriage age these days is around 30-33 and the birth rate what it is.

The mentality has to change.... everyone wasn't meant for a post secondary education. Many people go to college or university because they don't know what to do with their lives. Without a strong artisan, construction and manufacturing base, there aren't many jobs for people that don't want to pursue an education. For the most part, school has become a social gathering where people just incur debt without any means in the future to repay that debt.

Too true.
There are too many “soft” Degrees are being “studied” with no value either to the student or society.
I have in mind things like media studies, “Business studies” and the like.

"Liberal Arts" comes to mind. Sure it's great to have artists, actors, etc.... but does 30% of the population need to be a professional mime?

Interesting. I know some schools here give preferential admission if you get your teaching credentials. Otherwise, I know other countries will pay to have you teach in their country. However, the #1 is Japan for English-language teachers.

My parents picked my major. However, it doesn't really matter because jobs here are more based on what level degree you earned instead of what you received your degree in.

Job opportunities (in the UK) for new graduates in the past 2-3 year have been horrendous.

Many graduates have switch their ambitions to become teachers (in desperation) with the appropriate bridging course.

Basically there is no need for the government to provide incentives to encourage people to become teachers.
