What martial arts helps prepare you mentally before you have to defend yourself? What martial arts instills confidence that you can take whoever tries to attack you (or at least hold your own)? Some martial arts just provide plenty of doubt whether you can handle yourself in a real fight or not. What are the ones that are just the opposite and provide a lot of confidence in your ability to fight if need be (list several)?

Al Capone thought it was the use of the Tommy gun.Politics is not about the pursuit of morality nor what's right or wrong
Its about self interest at personal and national level often at odds with the above.
Great politicians pursue the National interest and small politicians personal interests

Ninjitsu and Systema are good mixed martial arts, they are as useful in standing position as they are in ground fighting, and employ ridiculously simple blows to disarm your opponent, though developing techniques for using them right takes a lot of practice. Stances are never rigid, always fluid, able to absorb and deflect attacks and transform the opponent's offensive movements into their own worst nightmare. You fight with a calm demeanor, every response to the opponent is a move that maximizes your choices of subsequent action.

Same thing with guns, you could hit the bulls eye in a target range everytime but freeze like rabit when you have to shoot at a man, especially if he is bigger and about to shoot you.

^^ that is the best during a street fighting but the question is about state of mind at the moment about to be attacked when you least expected it, at least that is how I understood the question.B0zkurt Hunter

Obviously the vast majority of people do not expect to get into a fight in any of these places, particularly at home. I stand by Sambo and submission wrestling.B0zkurt Hunter
