What language should I take

I need another class for this semester, but most of the electives are full, since as a transfer student I'm coming in late, so if worst comes to worst, I'm going to take a language instead of an elective

I did Span 1 at my college, but all the Sanish classes are booked, and I don't really care about continuing in it.


The options I currently have are

Japanese
Chinese (don't know if it's Mandarin or Cantonese, emailed inquiry about it)
French
German
Italian
Portugues
Japanese
Hebrew
Latin

There were Russian and Arabic classes but they're either full or conflict with my schedule.

I think I'm leaning toward chinese

It's always good to learn & know more languages. If I had to pick from the list it would probably be French.

I think I'm leaning toward chinese

I'm learning Latin on my own now, and I recommend it if you're interested in having a strong base to learn any Romance language, so that in a very real sense, you'll automatically be learning things that will help you in French, Italian and Portuguese. Having a base in Armenian is very useful for learning Latin because Latin inflects (using suffixes for) its nouns for case and number, and its verbs for person, number, tense, mood and aspect (the last three of which determine, in the order presented: "when" the action is done, in what manner it is being addressed (indicative = giving information, imperative = giving a command), and finally whether the action is completed or ongoing. There will be new things to learn such as gender (neither Armenian, nor English have gender, Latin has 3: masculine, feminine and neuter, which are marked on pronouns, nouns and adjectives in a way similar to how number gets marked in typical English nouns with an -s suffix, i.e. singular: dog, plural: dogs).

I checked ratemyproffesors.com and the German, Chinese, and Russian prof's all got high marks. I guess German would be the easiest since it still uses a latin script, and there's many similarities between it and English. But I still wonder about taking Russian, Chinese, or Arabic.

I'm curious about arabic b/c I'm left handed and it would be easy to write from left to right for me, but if I took it, I'd also have to go an extra day a week, and there's also still no prof. listed for it, so I can't even ask other students about what class will be like let alone look he or she up online. Japanese and Italian also only list "staff" so I have no idea about those either.

But you also have to look @ it from the view of what is a language that's going to help you. Everyone knows that learning Spanish is a plus, I think it depends o the population of your area & the language they speak the most,from there you can choose.

Italian is much like Spanish. German grammar is more difficult than English. However it is a good language to have. Japanese is easier than Madarin. Arabic and Russian are both difficult and you would want to have a good reason to learn either, as it would take years.

Well I read in one article that learning how to speak Mandarin is easy, it's just the writing system that's difficult, then I read another article that stated that even if I was a top tier student who took chinese for 5 years I'd still not be able to speak it properly.

Idk, I think I still want to take it, I'm down between that and German. I know if I take German I'll most likely have an easier time, and get an A b/c it's similar to english and I have a handle on German pronunciation since I had to sing german songs when I did choir in HS... But I also feel like I could learn German (to a degree) on my own if I wanted too, but know I'd probably never learn Chinese on my own, so I want to take that one more, but I'm afraid I could also totally bomb it, and kill my GPA

If I wew you I would either take Arabic or Italian but that's just my opinion
