    Road Trips

    Man, I just drove down to LA from up in Oregon and it was gorgeous. I really took my time, too, driving along all the scenic coastal routes, taking time to sunbathe and char my poor skin.

    Have any of you guys gone on any road trips recently? Do you have any scenic highway recommendations? Other than the coastal highways in Oregon and California, I'd say everyone should drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway (for all you New Yorkers) at some point. Also, you should hike at least parts of the AT and the Pacific Crest. What a gorgeous country this is when you get out of the cities. All you poor LA armos need to come up to Portland sometime. Get away from the concrete and brown skies.

    Ok, I want to go. How come you have all this freedom to go on road trips as you please? Damn the only 'road trip' I've ever taken is to Vegas. That doesn't even count. I am going to make a list and add your suggestions to it and then go on a long drive. Got any more?

      Usually I road trip during the summer. I may as well admit my parents finance everything. They think it's healthy for me to see the country that way. I've taken the semester off, so that's why I'm down here right now.

      If you're into desert roadtrips, I'd suggest you go up and see the eastern parts of Washington and Oregon. Not a lot of people know they're deserts. And of course you have to see the Grand Canyon, and Carlsbad Caverns in Las Cruces, NM. The painted desert in New Mexico is gorgeous.

        My road trip preferences run towards scenery, twisty roads, and modern campgrounds. I avoid big cities as much as possible (I see enough of that everyday). For me, my trips truly begin when I reach the Rockies

        From there, I can go from snowfields (even in mid-July) to dense forests to roasting deserts in a single day's drive. There's amazing stuff between the Rockies and the West Coast that you'll never see anywhere else. The Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, Arches (and a host of other national parks and monuments) are all spectacular, to say the least.


        1)Rt 550... The Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Durango, Colorado. which is a fairly harrowing (by US standards) road over the top of the western ridge of the rockies. From Ouray, you could then swing back to Salt Lake City, if you were so inclined, or continue on to Wyoming and Yellowstone/Grand Tetons.


        2)Anywhere on the Pacific coast highway. I'd say start as far north as possible. The entire coast-from the Olympic Peninsula south-is spectacular, as is the Oregon coast and the Mendocino to San Francisco coast. A couple suggestions: 17-Mile Drive in Carmel is beautiful, but my choice in that area is Pt. Lobos State Park. I think it's the most spectacular scenery on the coast.

          Ah, there is at least one trip I know I'm taking this summer that involves the car-- driving to Joshua Tree. Perhaps I should look into these other things.

            I here nothing but good things about Joshua Tree. Really great spot for a weekend camping trip.

              There are some pretty nice views from the tops of the trails at Joshua Tree, where they have those old gold mines. There's some decent beginner-level rock climbing, too.

                The only reason I'd go to Portland is to watch the Lakers abuse the Blazers. I don't myself as a big road trip kind of guy but it's something I gotta do once.
