Like, let's say you kicked someone's dog and then duck taped ( along with rope ) it's legs and shaved it and then spray painted a Satani pentagram star with 666, and you don't say anything at all. Now, lying would be saying you didn't, if it was brought up. But is it lying if you just keep it to yourself, and they never even knew you did that to their dog?
Well, if you are not telling them for their own good, then no, it's not lying, it's simply not telling, as long as the person doesn't ask you about it.

However if you are not telling for your own 'good' then you are lying. Doesn't matter if they ask or not.

I think there is a better question here. Forget whether or not it is lying. The real question is: Should you lie if it works out to your own advantage?

Call it what you will, but keeping silent to protect yourself and lying to protect yourself are equally bad in my book even if they are not exactly the same thing.

I think I answered this in my prior post.

But to be more specific- It always depends on the situation.

If you lie for your advantage, and you are the only one this lie influences, and in no way does it hurt another, than yes, you can lie for your own advantage. However when two people are influenced by the lie, one in a positive manner the other a negative (positive being you) than no, you don't lie, because you are doing it at the expense of the other.

Who cares? I fail to see why lying is even the major issue here. Honesty should not be a supreme policy all on its own. If someone tells you they want to kill your friend's dog, and proceeds to ask you if you know where the dog is, are you going to tell?
