Anyone know of a private company trying to develop these? I know Cal Tech has a lab and I'm sure other schools do as well, but are there any prospects for doing this in industry?

Not any time soon. There have been sooo many trillions of dollars invested to perfect silicon and the CMOS process for making processors that any other technology, even far superior ones, have basically no chance at this point to make too much of an impact in the industry .. at least not in the forseeable future.

However, technologies like optical computing and at least on-chip optical interconnect (as opposed to wires) do seem to hold a lot of promise.

Quantum computing is still out there in the research phase ...

The problem is, processors are REALLY really fast now. We simply are starting to reach a point where we don't need the faster and faster speed. Things like embedding processors in our daily environments in forms of small, cheap, and wireless devices seems to be the direction the research and eventually industry is going towards. This is where power and cost become critical because most of these devices will be battery powered or using some sort of renewable energy source (like solar).
    this post = teh win.

Well, I think the point with quantum circuits is size. We're talking about a circuit that consists of a single atom. Imagine the computing power you could fit into a simple handheld device with technology like that. Anyway, estimates I've heard say that it might be a feasible technology around ten years from now or so, which is exactly what I was hoping. I'll have been out of school for a couple of years at least by then and there should be massive start-up opportunities.
