  • I, Robot...

(This is just a quick review.)

It was a fun movie to watch...notwithstanding, I was disappointed. It had the potential of being a psychological and philosophical marinade of a high order but fell short as it yeilded an action-movie feel spotted with standard Will Smith one-liners. It was blunt. I was half expecting and half hoping it would have the subtlety of Dark City — analogous to fine, handcrafted knitwork. Instead, it was rushed and, in a milder sense, cheapened. It felt like a long, misleading Hollywood trailer to a nonexistent film that would be comparable to the most groundbreaking in the science-fiction genre.

I do not believe it is fair to criticize it through the pages of Asimov's original work because it was not intended to be anymore than an allusion to begin with. It would be impossible to make films that do justice to that sort of literature. The I, Robot series is, afterall, not a Stephen King novel. And, I am compelled to say that Proyas directed the screenplay as well as he could but I cannot tell after only one viewing whether he could have added more depth than it had.

Is it worth seeing? Yes, it is. Grab a snack and watch an enjoyable blockbuster feature. Just do not expect to find anything intellectually engrossing.

I've read the book, and the movie seems nothing like it, yet it still intrigues me, nayeenk.

Actually, one of the few things I am glad about is that such a thing was avoided.

I hope Alex will use his newfound money and influence to produce more intellectual projects. Unfortunately, he has suggested that this film may be the first in a series of films.
