If I remember correctly (or after reading back a few posts), you were the one who brought up the topic of Jesus’ footwear.

Anyway, you’re right. There are much more important things to talk about in the Bible. For example, rape. But don’t even get me started on this or on why the Bible completely subordinates women.

It’s interesting how the Bible treats the topic of sex. Men don’t have sex with women, they “go in to” women. For example, Sarai tells Abram to “go in to my slavegirl” and this results in the birth of Ishmael (Genesis 16.2). Notice how the “slavegirl” has no choice in whether or not she wants to have sex. It’s rape I tell you!...

I mean, I don’t know about you guys, but I surely wouldn’t want my kids to read that and think that it’s ok. Anyway, that’s just me and that was only one example (now think of the Virgin Mary!).

So is this important enough? (as opposed to Jesus’ footwear?)

Okay Im not understanding you. You dont want your kids to read the Bible or that part of the Bible? If you dont want them to read that buy a childrens Bible.

Well, that part of the Bible (and many others that are as bad). And buying a children's Bible does not change the fact that the original Bible accepts such behavior and uses it to drive its plot.

Look, I'm not an atheist. I just want people to be aware of such things.

lolll I wasnt stating that you were. I just wanted to know. That is all. And its your opinion. The contemporary world thinks that way. The Bible is viewed by the "world of the reader" and what they believe in. Nothing wrong with that!!!!!

Oh, I totally agree! The Bible itself is an awesome piece of literature.

I mean, I prefer the New Testament to the Old Testament because it promotes forgiveness rather than revenge. However, I like to think of both as great examples of poetic justice (present in every book that I have read so far).

U are playing with words here, and you dont understand the authority of which thes actions were taken plae under. Plus, that would be the old testament, and the Virgin Mary example almost made me literally crack up... Please do explain how she was raped by the Holly Spirit?, we shall continue from there
How do you hurt a masochist?

There is one thing people forget to understand and its that the Bible was written so long ago that beliefs and idea change. maybe a 1000 years ago having 10 wives was a good thing. That is history, that is how things work. People change. Ideas change. In many ways, we cannot say the written text is wrong when we did not live at that time and we do not understand their beliefs.

So yeah thats my opinion on it and thats what I wanted to add to gevo's post

Ummm, what authority? It is this kind of thinking that gets people into trouble. No one has the authority to rape...(I'm not playing with words here. I stand by everything I previously stated and no amount of convincing could change my views. However, I respect your opinion.)

I'm glad that my argument cracks you up. I will not explain to you the situation of the Virgin Mary. If you do not already see all that was wrong with it, no one can explain that to you. Goey was right when she said that it has to do with how you see it. My intention is not to try to convince anyone to see things the way I do.

The only reason I mentioned any of this was because some people thought this thread should get a bit more serious. Anyway, I'm not here to discredit the Bible, nor do I want the burden of such judgment on my shoulders. All I wanted to do was point it out to you guys. I mean that one little quotation I included could lead to controversial discussions about sex, rape, adultery, stavery, contempt, etc.

Thanks. I agree. But it's also important to note that we are asked to apply this old text to our lives today. And this is where the conflicts arise. Maybe they should modernize the Bible...(this is obviously a joke, but hey).

This is a very common and detrimental misconception amongst many critics of the Bible that I have encountered. If you do not understand by which means the old testaments rituals and beleifs have been fulfilled then you should try to do so before accusing the Bible, and saying it can not be applied to modern life. It can, and that is the beauty of it, it is timeless, jsut as God does not have a sense of time, neither does his word (given you beleive this is the word of God, more or less). I can explain, but what we are discussing seems to allready be outside of the context of this thread, read into it, find out the relation between the old testament and the new, and what one is for the other. And, this isnt something i am perceiving, something i opiniated for my own pleasure, this is directly from the Bible, this is what the Bible teaches, and infact, it is a great prophetic solution to the preceding prophecies Before the time of Jesus himself.
