Study Abroad

Since I'm majoring in International Studies it's kinda expected of me to study abroad, which I'm glad cause I really want to do it. Has anybody here ever participated in study abroad? If so where and when did you go and did you like it?
My International Studies major is concentrated in one region in particular, eastern europe and russia, so I'm starting to look into study abroad programs that they offer at my school in Russia. I wish they offered one in Armenia, that would be nice, sucks that they dont.

I've had a few friends do it, they loved it, one in Italy and three in Spain. They said it was the best experience of there lives, if that helps you.

I was in armenia and studied there for a short period of time at the music conservatoria, and I would say that it
was quite an experience! I would recomment it to everyone.



Needless to say, it broadens your views to study in a different country , and -mixing with people from a different culture perhaps even more than you did in your hometown.
Ive thought of studying abroad myself in the near future, havent decided yet but it leans more or less to France.

As an Armenian Studies and Russian Language and Literature major, I will most likely be doing at least a semester in Eastern Europe in the next two years. I am actually expected to go to Armenia for Armenian Studies, which is understandable of course.

I would like to go to any French speaking region in Europe as well, for the sake of my French. I hope that I get the chance.

Absolutely go for it and enjoy! I never studied abroad (shame) - but my wife did - in Mexico and in Paris France - and she loved it. She always speaks fondly of her experiences and of the families she lived with while in school. So a few years ago I managed to contact the family she stayed with in Paris and we set up a suprise (for her) visit - she hadn't seen them in 15 years...it was awesome - she was so surprised - and they treated us so well - had us for diner (and the treat for me was that they served some very fine wine from their own vinyards! - vintage 1974! - great stuff...)...anyway - we got to meet a student (from Poland) that was staying with them at the time...all these years later...so yeah - a great experience....

You don't have to go through your school's programs. You can go through other accredited schools (CA State, link below, for example.) Just be sure that if you choose one of these, you check the credits transfer with your uni before you pay/go. Also, you might get big (full) scholarships (maybe even paying all--even above tuition) if you are serious and apply with big effort (I did).

"Qualified participants of Armenian descent are eligible for a travel fellowship from Birthright Armenia which includes travel fellowships for diasporan Armenians."


That advice is relevant if you live in US or some of EU--otherwise ask a mentor for other options.

Well yes Obviously thats what a mentors for to guide you. Your right they are more expierenced.

Ok. I don't think that was my basic point, but you are correct that Mentors are Mentors. I wonder how many Armenian students would like to study in Armenia or study Armenian (or both), but aren't even aware that they CAN (sometimes on full scholarship.) That's MY point. Talk to a mentor at your school for more help (to a student reading this and maybe might do so.)
