    Medi Fever-did you know???

    In a casual conversation with another Armenian, I learned about a desease called Mediterranean Fever:

    Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is also called recurrent polyserositis. The salient features of FMF include brief recurrent episodes of peritonitis, pleuritis, and arthritis, usually with accompanying fever.


    Notice they approximate that 1 in every 7 Armenians carries this. (obviously recessive) Did you know about this desease? Does this concern you?

    If you have a better source please post it. I am hoping that the 1/7 is wrong.

    yes I am a carrier (and am iron deficient) - have known about it for some time. Can't help you with more info though - used to have some - but lost the links...sotty

      How do you know youre a carrier? You asked your Dr for a test or were you in a study or ...? Id like to find out if I am a carrier.

        I kept comming up as iron deficient (and I often get and sustain very high fevers - for an adult - 103-104 etc) and when they looked into it they determined it was MFF. It was additionaly verified when we had our second baby as my wife was over 35 and we had a full genetic do-up. I can't really tell you more at the moment (but may be mor eto the volume of wine I have consumed then anythig else - perhaps I will think of something later eh?)

                I told my mom and her husband (a Jew). Neither heard of anyone in their family having anything like this, and never heard of the desease at all. My father's parents and siblings didnt have anything as far as I know. Noone I know in my family has such symptoms, but still...just by carrying I wouldnt have symptoms. I think I will get tested before I get married.

                  Actualyy AB - the combo of Armenian and Jewish genes can be deadly with FMF and Tai Sachs - they both should be tested etc.
