At the moment I'm in Ankara - hotel is about $25 a night. No air conditioning but perfectly acceptable.
Hotels in the US are made to make the hotel owners wealthy. One of the times I lived in Costa Rica, I spent about $1.50/day to live with a family (private room, laundry, and food). In Ecuador, I lived for a month on less than $150, including all the stuff I bought (like a hand woven Quechua blanket that alone costs $200 in a shop in Madison.) While I was on the beach in Ecuador, I spent less than $. 45/day--(yes, that's cents) to live (in a modest apartment, buying fresh water, and eating only rice and beans and fresh fruit.)

Yeah, I got 'issues.' I don't know that my room can help me with these much, though. However, spending less gives me more money to spend, elsewhere.

Crissy, I wasn't impressed in San Francisco (though the ocean drive between is great). Maybe you saw different things. I went to a hip underground club that was cool (were you enter in an unmarked alley door). Then, close to Haight & Ashbury (which is lots like State St. in Madison), there was a guy handing out literature. The wind blew a bunch of his papers on the ground. I was being nice and collected what I could and gave them back to him--he literally screamed at me and I still don't understand why. The whole vibe there should be hippy-like, but he wasn't.

Sip, do you know the name of the town that is the capital of artichokes (and where people all seem like 'robots.' )

          I googled it.

Crissy, did you get a chance to visit any of the places I mentioned in San Diego?

Edit: my computer shut down. Sip, what part of LA are you from? I spent a few days in LA, but most on Venice Beach.

Crissy, what was your favorite city in the US, and why? Did you spend any time out of the cities? If you go to Chicago (I LOVE Chicago), let me know. Chicago has really great stuff to offer. Plus, you would only be a short trip to Madison (much smaller, but a great place to visit--especially, like anywhere, if you know people here...)

I live just south of Santa Rosa, only ten minutes or so outside the city. It is pretty nice up here, but the place I'm at is deserted right now. Unfortunately, I can't go out much due to the highest pollen counts in the country. Not unless I want to take a medication that I really don't want to take.

Hell yeah it is. California was named after a mythical Spanish paradise. They didn't name it that for nothing.

You didn't say you have allergies, but I think you might.

Dr. 'Anahita' thinks you should camp in a tent, away from the city, at least 3 times in the next 4 months and see if you alergies get much better. I think they will. If you might, let me know and I'll say more...

I don't live in a city Anahita. I live across the street from a couple of giant fields and some farms. I actually didn't have such bad allergy problems when I lived in the city. It's pollen I'm allergic to.

You might actually be right about the woods, though. I'm worst with these damn fields around. Actual trees and brush aren't so bad. Wait, you didn't actually say anything about woods.

Avoiding the pollen season back home.

Loseyourname, 'Dr Cat' says you should try to take a holiday in a different part of the world, somewhere that is either farther north or farther south in relation to your home, when the pollen count is going to be highest at home.
