  • Amenian welcome ??

    Hello from Manchester UK,

Recognising Armenian as one of the world's major languages, I'm looking to translate a simple welcome into Armenian and hoping you might be able to help.

The text I'm looking to translate is..
    -----------
    Hello World
    Welcome to my website
I am sorry that I don't speak Armenian but thought I would say hello
    anyway.
If you do speak English this site is full of some of the best poetry,
writing and wisdom the English speaking world has to offer.
There are also lists of recommended films, music and websites.
    Best wishes
    ------------

You can see more of my efforts at

My reason for doing this is simply that only one quarter of those people who understand English, use it as their first language. Rather than be ignorant, I try to welcome all visitors in their first language, that is, the language they understand best and that welcomes them most effectively.

        East v west

Thanks for pointing out the difference, Jahannam.

I'm expecting it maybe Eastern I want although maybe both?.. Whichever is the more common.

Ethnologue suggested to me that the dialects are inherently intelligible but that there are a few more speaking Eastern Armenian..?

However, if you suggest the two are significantly different, I can easily have one of each.. I've done this with Portugese and Brazilian Portuguese.

          that's a cool website...
I think you should go with eastern... they ARE a majority.
it all depends on the person though...
I myself don't have a problem understanding both... but since you're gonna have it typed in English, some people might be like HUH?

              Unicode

I should maybe suggest how I intend to type Armenian..
using Unicode.. which provides font independance.

In order to view the text of another language you need a font that can display that part of unicode that defines that languages characters. Unicode, is similar to ascii, in that it provides a unique reference for characters, however unicode defines characters in most every language of the world. If your not familiar with Unicode you can find out more at - www.unicode.org and Alan Wood's Unicode Resources

Failing that I'll fall back on a graphic of the text.. but expect that Unicode will work.

                got western need eastern

Thanks to ~Lar~ I now have Western Armenian but still need Eastern.

                Lar used latin ~transliteration from
                http://www.cilicia.com/armo_alphabet.html
which I then mashed into Unicode Armenian characters.

The western still needs checking, as I expect I've made mistakes but for sure its one step closer.

Can anyone help with the Eastern??
