GSM coverage is growing very fast in the US but it's still doesn't seem to be as good as CDMA if you ask me. But I am not sure which ones have overall better coverage in the US ... CDMA carriers or GSM (I'd guess still CDMA).
One advantage of CDMA is the EVDO networks popping up that'll give you supposedly up to 2Mbps data rates ... with GSM, you'll probably get somewhere around 70 Kbps (max is 384 Kbps I think). So if using the cel service for data is important to you, this might be something to consider also. With my phone, I can get EVDO in many places I go but I am not really using it since it still costs a lot (also since I have WiFi on it).

I don't think most people think about coverage, they just tend to choose what network their friends are on.
